To start with, it's got one of the coolest visuals on an iPhone app game introduction video, putting it up there with the style of the Street Fighter 4 app intro video.
However, more than anything, it's incredible quality gaming for just 69p. The graphics are amazing and rarely glitch, although the glitches that for our play has probably got more to do with the fact that it was played on a 3G, as opposed to the 4S that we're still waiting on.
There's also a great array of characters to choose from, including all of the Sonic faithful like the Hedgehog himself, Tails and Dr. Eggman (he'll always be Dr. Robotnik to us). There's also Aiai from Super Monkey Ball and Billy Hatcher, as well as Amigo, Beat, Chuih, B.D. Joe, and Shenmue's Ryo Hazuki as unlockable characters.
Sonic and Sega All Star Racing is playable online, has multiplayer for local connections, a good selection of modes including time-trail, missions, Grand Prix and single race and it takes just a few plays to get used to the controls. What more do you need from an app game.
While the adrenaline doesn't really kick in until you unlock later levels and difficulty in the single player game, it's an instant rush when you play against people online or your friends in local multiplayer. It takes a few plays to get to know where some of the trickier turns are on certain tracks, but once you do you've got a much better chance of keeping up with the computer opposition.
Though there are a number of times that you're only vaguely aware of where you are on the track and the narrow sections can leave you ping ponging around, Sonic and Sega All Star Racing as an iPhone app game works amazingly well.
