Radio analogue switch off - DAB digital radio switchover planned for 2015
As of 2015 the analogue radio signal will be switched off. All of your radios – the funky old fashioned one you’ve got in your kitchen, the alarm radio with the battered snooze button on your bedside table and the in your car that refuses to work properly with your iPod – will no longer pick up analogue signals from the UK. From that point on it’ll be pretty much digital Britain.
The government is pushing for manufacturers to start producing DAB radios that retail for under £20 and considering you can already get digital TV boxes for around that prize it shouldn’t be that much of a problem for them. Work is also under way to get auto manufacturers to start developing cars with digital radios.
It’s still a while away, but it’ll be 2015 before you know it you know. Luckily, you can get digital radio stations through the internet, so even if you do get to 2015 without buying a digital radio, you won’t be completely shot.
However, for those of you that have already gotten on the case, you’re probably already all over digital radio stations like BBC 6 Music. However, with rumours that it could be axed, it’s time for the rest of you to get amongst it.
