Woody Guthrie, the founding father of American folk music paved the way for a whole generation of folk singers, including Bob Dylan and Jonny Cash. He inspired the concept of the protest song during the Great Depression and his life is coming to the West End in Woody Sez: The Words, Music & Spirit of Woody Guthrie.
While the pictures on The Arts Theatre, London's website make it look like it might be a bit lame, I reckon the power of Woody Guthrie's words, music & folked up spirit will probably make it a lot better than it looks.
Woody Sez starts at The Arts Theatre on Great Newport Street on the 13th January and will run through to the 2nd April 2011. This Land Is Your Land and Bound for Glory are mentioned on the website write-up, but hopefully they'll also feature the mean version of House of the Rising Sun that Guthrie did back in 1940 and the children's song (Take Me) Riding in My Car.
Guthrie's the kind of person you'd imagine at the heart of The Grapes of Wrath and the musical legacy that he has left behind is undeniable significant. Hopefully the Woody Sez production at The Arts Theatre will do justice to his words, songs and spirit.
