It has been announced that Mad Max Fury Road, a direct sequel to the post-apocalyptic trilogy that so many of us grew up with, will star Charlize Theron as the leading lady. So long as she’s not getting a Monster makeover, this can only be good news. Although I doubt that Mad Max 4 has got much chance of garnering her a second Oscar.

Not out until 2012, little is known about Mad Max Fury Road’s plot, however, what we do know is that the film will also star Tom Hardy who played Charlie Bronson in Bronson (2008) and who will star alongside Gary Oldman later in 2011 in the Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy film remake. Clearly, this isn’t going to be a pretty-boy performance, so it might just be that the low expectations that are being bandied around for Mad Max 4 will be smashed in Hardy’s wake.

On top of all this, George Miller, the director of the original three films of the brutal franchise, is back again at the wheel. So long as he can steer it away from the ridiculous Mad Max Beyond the Thunderdome, which ended any potential that Tina Turner’s acting career had, then he could well be on to a helter skelter ride to reprieve the legacy of Mad Max in 2012.

Production for Mad Max Fury Road was set to commence in October 2011, but it was hit by a number of location difficulties thanks to the uncharacteristic wet weather in Australia. According to an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, George Miller said that, "The Mad Max landscape looked like Wales", which probably doesn’t do the best job at portraying a post apocalyptic desert backdrop.

Filming for Mad Max 4 is now rumoured to be moving to Namibia to complete the production from early 2012. Hopefully, the South African nation will not be hit with any unexpected rain issues.
