At the time it was hard to see any way to give support to Suu Kyi in any other way than to write about her situation. However, thanks to Avaaz it's now possible to add your voice to a petition to world leaders to urge the military Junta government in Burma to release its political prisoners and call a ceasefire between it and armed ethnic groups.
Avaaz are looking to pull together 500,000 signed petitions to give weight to the campaign. However, the fact that organisations like Avaaz are still needed to call for greater attention to situations like this only goes to highlight the lack of a strong international stance on political suppression.
To sign the online petition, which takes about ten seconds to complete, visit http://www.avaaz.org/en/stand_with_aung_san_suu_kyi/?vl. If somehow international sympathy can motivate the Burmese Junta to make real moves in the right direction, it will go some way to undo the years of military style governance.
