It's not very often that a computer game comes along and the trailer or video introduction makes you think, "this is going to be huge", but take a look at the video below and tell me that's not what you think about Mass Effect 3.
The storyline for the third and final part of the Mass Effect Trilogy picks up following the events of the second game, in which Commander Shepherd overcame the insect-like Collectors that were controlled by the frighteningly dogged Reapers. The Commander finds himself on earth, on trial, just as a mass invasion begins, led by the seemingly unstoppable Reapers.
One of the cleverest elements of the Mass Effect trilogy is that actions in earlier games are saved and can be transferred into the next in the series. Meaning that a decision you might have made in the first game will roll over into Mass Effect 3 (although there is an option to start the start from scratch).
However, as with earlier games, Mass Effect 3 is all about pulling everyone together to defend against the Reapers. This time, though, it'll be for an epic battle to reclaim earth from their occupation.
If the gameplay is as impressive as the video scenes in the trailer then this should be a bit impressive. It's the kind of game that will inevitably feels a little daunting and all encompassing to begin with, but that should turn into one massive absorbing theatre, like those created by the more recent Final Fantasy games.
Out on the 9th March 2012, Mass Effect 3 is set for release on Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC. Developed by Bioware, it's best summed up as an RPG with a love of third person shooter action. More attention to detail has been given to ME3's graphics compared to earlier games, so expect it to be a detailed and lushly textured intergalactic mother of a mission. The Xbox version will be Kinect compatible.
