Lou Reed announces Metal Machine Trio UK gigs for 2010
Back in 1975 Lou Reed released his biggest departure from the sound of The Velvet Underground in the infamous Metal Machine Music, a double LP of recorded feedback loops. Now 35 years on Reed brings back this sound with his band Metal Machine Trio, which will do a series of gigs in the UK during April.
Along with musicians Ulrich Krieger and Sarth Calhoun (yeah I don’t believe they’re real names either) Reed will reinvent the sound of the ’75 album with nights of deep noise. There’ll be no songs or vocals, and the sets are not taken directly from the album, but are apparently improvised collaborations between the trio on each night.
Metal Machine Trio have already recorded a live album and despite the fact that some critics asserted that the original album was either a joke or a half azzed attempt at fulfilling contractual requirements, Reed seems to be taking the conceptual piece very seriously.
Either way, it’s going to be loud, avant-garde and feedback wound.
April tour dates:
Cambridge Junction - 17th April
Oxford O2 Academy - 18th April
London Royal Festival Hall - 19th April
Metal Machine Music will also be reissued on double vinyl on 5th April.
