Guy Garvey’s Finest Hour on BBC Radio 6 Music
Every Sunday – 10-12pm
It’s a Sunday and I’m shattered. It’s been a long week in work and I’m still suffering from a beat of a hangover and a sauna like 3 hour bus trip back to London from Cardiff. I need something to get my head reset at the end of a heavy weekend and to get me settled in for a decent sleep before another excruciating week of work. Turning to Guy Garvey and his Finest hour is the perfect fix.
It’s not action packed, but did you really expect it to be. It’s great for Sunday night listening though as a prelude to a beautiful night’s sleep. I’m not saying it’s boring, because it’s not at all, unless you have a moronic attention span, but it is definitely a good way to reset and relax at the end of a weekend. Plus if Garvey’s über laid back tones don’t have you snoring before 12 then all you’ve got left as an option is a shovel to the back of the head.
However, the best part about the show is Guy’s knowledge of music. He plays a wide range of music taking in Leonard Cohen and The Shangri-Las on this occasion. Not only does he play genuinely interesting music, but he’s also got a raft of info nuggets about the music he’s playing, including a backhand swipe at Adam Cohen (Leonard’s son). He didn’t go so far as to say he was crap live, but he definitely implied it.
The Finest hour is a well crafted and thoughtful radio show that’ll give you a big boost in musical horizons. It’s best listened to from the comfort of your PJs and duvet like some kind of multi-layered musical mobile that hangs all around your bed with wizened messages of musical brilliance. I’m not sure if this is the kind review that Guy Garvey would want to get, but the fact is that the show is class and I “love it all”.
