The Yeah Yeah Yeahs will be back in April with the release of new album, Mosquito. They’ve been relatively quiet since their 2009 album, It’s Blitz! and subsequent world tour, but they’re joining the fray once again, bringing the New York three piece of Karen O, Brian Chase and Nick Zinner back to the alt rock and post-punk revival music scene.
To beast up the announcement, they’ve also released new single, Sacrifice, which is available to download and from all good record shops. If you pre-order the album from iTunes you get the single straight away, but it’s also getting a lot of air play on BBC 6 music, so if you tune in, your bound to get to listen to it.
Alternatively, you can watch the video for the single, which features model and actress Lily Cole, in the magic box below. Directed by Megaforce and produced by Kathleen Hefferman, the video is a mental reverse timeline of Cole’s fallen woman demise at the hands of her former lovers.
It’s not easy to see what the sentiment behind the video is – whether it screams for Cole’s judgement or flashes a light on the sadistic response of her crazed old flames – but that sort of adds to it’s sheen.
The single is neither Gold Lion nor Zero but it still manages to be distinctly Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Combining alt rock, post-punk sentiments and a gospel choir, it feels like a grower, but the real test will be how well it fits in the whole album.
Mosquito is set for release on the 15th April 2013, but Sacrilege is already out. It’s probably just a matter of time before they announce some UK gigs to go with their New York shows in early April.
