Will there be a sequel to John Wick Chapter 4 or another film in the series?

If you’ve just seen John Wick Chapter 4, the biggest question you might have is will there be a sequel. For everyone else, there’s a lot of story detail below, so if you haven’t seen the film yet you might want to skip reading the very last section, “Will there be a John Wick 5?”

The general answer is there will be more from the series, but just not in the traditional sense of things. There’s a pretty big team surrounding the franchise, and it’s been hugely successful on the big screen, so it doesn’t make sense for it to come to an end after the 4th film.

The story sees John taking on the might of the High Table with help from The Bowery King, despite the gunshot injury that Winston left him with at the end of Chapter 3. This time he faces off against Bill Skarsgard as high level High Table Marquis de Gramont and Donnie Yen as Caine, an assassin for the organisation.

What next for the John Wick series?

The good news is that there will be more from the franchise and the first of these will be a TV show called The Continental. It’ll be a prequel to the films, taking place in the iconic New York hotel, with the focus on a young Winston Scott, who will be played by Colin Woodell (Ambulance).

It’ll be a three part special set in 1975 as Winston makes a play to take over the management for the establishment. In the process he’ll come face to face with the city that never sleeps’ criminal underworld, so it’s probably going to be a bit of a mission in the end.

In addition to Woodell, the John Wick prequel will also star Ayumede Edegun as a younger Charon. It’s a role that will be all the more poignant with the recent passing of Lance Reddick, who plays The Continental concierge in the films, culminating in Chapter 4.

The cast for the three-part special will also include Peter Greene as body disposal expert Uncle Charlie, and Mel Gibson as Cormac. There’s also Ben Robson as Frankie, Hubert Point-Du Jour as Miles, Jessica Allain as Lou, Mishel Prada as KD and Nhung Kate as Yen.

It’s set to stream later in 2023 on Peacock in North America, and international rights have recently been picked up by Amazon Prime Video. That means you’ll be able to watch it with a subscription to the streaming service in the UK.

Will there be another film?

The good news doesn’t just stop at the TV mini series as there’s also a film in development called Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas. It’s a full spin-off movie that see the actor playing Rooney, a character that had a brief cameo in John Wick Chapter 3 – Parabellum.

At the time she was portrayed by renowned balled dancer Unity Phelan, but the role will be played by De Armas going forward and if her performance in No Time To Die is anything to go on it should be pretty epic. If you don’t remember the character, she appeared on stage in front of the Director when John goes to ask for help getting to Casablanca.

You see her face briefly after she’s told to stop and sits on the floor of the stage, but it’s not quite enough to make the switch to de Armas in the spin-off film that big a deal. In Chapter 3 she falls as she’s trying to land a complex spin, but the Director (Angelica Houston) commands her to go again just as John walks down the theater aisle.

The film looks set to carry on from that moment onward, so the timeline will be between Parabellum and John Wick Chapter 4. Everyone under the watch of the Director are assassins, and it’s where Baba Yaga started his training as an orphan, so that will be the case for Roony in Ballerina.

There is no release date for the film as of yet, but if we had to make a guess we’d have to say 2024 is the main contender. With JW4 out early this year and The Continental coming later in 2023, it puts Ballerina in the frame for next year at the earliest.

Will there be a John Wick Chapter 5?

If you’ve seen the film on the big screen and moved beyond our story details warnings above, then here are the no holds barred details. The end of John Wick Chapter 4 saw him succumbing to his injuries in the duel with Caine, despite taking out De Gramont and earning his freedom from the High Table.

With the character dead it seems unlikely that we’ll get John Wick Chapter 5, but you never truly know with the series. It’s possible that he faked his death to ensure he gets the freedom that he wants or maybe there will be a closer prequel, but the point is that it’s at least a possibility still.

A fifth film could pick up with him being discovered in hiding and having to face yet another trial at arms. Alternatively, someone that he cares about could be in danger, which would need him to give up his anonymity to save the day.

Overall, this remains an unlikely option, but we’ll have to wait and see for sure. If The Matrix Resurrections can bring back Trinity and Neo after so long then there’s always hope for another John Wick sequel.

If that isn’t enough, there was also the scene with Akira and Caine, which hinted at yet another possible spin-off or maybe hook for another main series film. Either way you look at it, though, there’s a lot to come from the franchise even with John Wick apparently out of the equation.

We’ll update you with more details on the spin-off and sequel as they’re confirmed. You can also check out our movie news section to keep tabs on the latest upcoming films, or visit the Lionsgate website at www.lionsgate.com.
