The latest addition to the world of basketball trainers arrived earlier today as the Nike Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG went on sale in the UK. As you could probably tell from the name alone, these are not the more futuristic styling the range has become accustomed to in recent but, but they are a brilliant throwback to the trainers the basketball legend would have worn when he was just starting out in his career.
The high tops are big and plush with more padding than Kanye West’s Twitter stream and a massively chunky base spread to give them a lot of stability when you’re attempting a particularly harsh pivot. In general, they’re a faithful recreation of the original sports shoes that inspired them with the addition of the Jordan signature hoops detail and updated technical features.
Their made with full grain leather uppers for a long lasting finish that looks quality and come with a rubber cupsole and an encapsulated Air-Sole unit in the heel which has been built to give you solid lightweight cushioning. The base sole is also rubber, engineered with deep flex grooves and a pivot spot grip for the ball of your foot to help deliver traction and flexibility.
In addition to their sporting capabilities on the basketball court, the Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG also look pretty sharp from a style perspective too. The retro look and feel of the trainers is very cool, so they’ll look as good with a pair of jeans as they do with a pair of basketball shorts and it’s down to you how skinny or baggy you want to go with them, depending on how you like your jeans.
MJ first laced up a pair of his Jordan Air 1 trainers back in 1985, but they had a distinct deep red and white colour combination in the design with a black Nike swoosh. The new design takes the structure and form of the classic basketball trainers and gives them a clean white finish, which works well with the deep blue Nike swoosh and the hoop detail on the ankle support.
Jordan made his professional debut back in 1984 when he was selected in the NBA draft to become a crucial part of what would go on to be a rejuvenated Chicago Bulls team. With his double three-peat genius, season after season of highest scoring players and more Finals MVPs than any other basketball star in history, Michael Jordan is easily the greatest player in NBA history. Equally (depending on how well the Nike self lacing trainers work out to be), the Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG Just might be one of the coolest pair of trainers of all time.
