Episode 6 of Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings TV series, The Rings of Power was a seismic shift in the direction for the show, so you might be wondering where Sauron is now. The series has now fully confirmed that Adar is not the one, so you might be wondering what exactly is going on.
For anyone that has read the whole of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, you’ve probably got a good idea, but it’s worth bearing in mind that the answer to the question will inevitably include spoilers for the rest of The Rings of Power series. Don’t read on unless you definitely want to know where Sauron is and what he’s up to.
AdvertisementWith that being said, here’s everything that you need to know. To begin with it’s easy to get confused by the events of the show because of our earthly understanding of time. However, the TV series is set in Arda, focusing on the continent of Middle Earth and the island nation of Numenor, so things work very differently.
To start with, a Numenorian lifetime is much longer than that of normal men, both here and in the world of J.R.R. Tolkien. Most of you will know that galadriel as an Elf is very long lived and while the Numenorians aren’t quite as slow to age, they can live to be 300 or so.
AdvertisementWhat this means is that there’s a lot of scope for Amazon to feature a lot of the characters like Elendil and his hon Isildur over a long timeline. The same is the case for Galadriel, along with the dark scourge that is Sauron, so there’s plenty still to come from the series.

If Adar isn’s Sauron then where is he?
Fans of the Tolkien legendarium will have known that Adar wasn’t Sauron from the very beginning, but we still didn’t know his origin and purpose 100%. The ears were a bit of a giveaway, but they were more well hidden before episode 6 of The Rings of Power.
AdvertisementNow we know that he’s a dark elf that has been taken and twisted to the side of Sauron, we can start to piece together what that means for the rest of The Lord of the Rings series. The good news is that it appears as though Amazon is keeping fairly close to the literary work that it’s based on – with a few embelishments thrown in for good measure – so we’ve got a good idea about where Sauron is now.
In terms of Adar, it seems his plan was simple. Far from killing Sauron, he was obviously lying to Galadriel when he told her that he’d killed his master. Instead, his mission was always to relight the fires of Mount Doom, which he achieved at the end of episode 6.
The reason for this is that Sauron is going to need the heat within the volcano in order to forge the One Ring when his Second Age plans come to fruition. However, before he gets that job done, he needs to forge the other Rings of Power, which tells us everything we need to know about where he is in the series.
In the books, Sauron takes a more duplicitous approach to taking over the world by working with the elves to craft the rings. The elves think the rings will help to keep them safe against the hidden forces of the Dark Lord, but they do not know about the One Ring, because it hasn’t been crafted yet.
To pull this off, Sauron disguises himself as the charming, handsome and helpful Annatar, who works with Celebrimbor and the rest of his elf team to make the rings. This is what’s happening in the elf arc of the story with Celebrimbor getting Elrond to secure the help of Durin IV and the rest of the dwarfs of Khazad-dûm.
Based on the fact that the efforts to create a powerful forge are underway, now with the help of the dwarfs and their Mithril, we’ve got to imagine that Annatar is already working with Celebrimbor. As a result, the answer to the question where is Sauron in The Lord of the Rings TV series is simply that’s he’s more than likely already holding court in Eregion.
As far as we know, he hasn’t been introduced in the series as of yet, but we’re expecting him to get a reveal towards the end of Series 1. This will probably reveal him working with Celebrimbor to create the Rings of Power before he heads of to the fires of Mount Doom to forge the One Ring to control them all and in the darkness bind them.
