We’ve seen a lot of new developments for the streaming platform this year, so here’s the low-down on when will Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 come out on Disney Plus. Things are now confirmed for the third and final chapter for Star Lord and team, but there was already a lot to take from other recent Disney films.
For a start we’ve had Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania, which kick-started Phase 5 of the MCU in February. There was also Avatar 2, which came out in December 2022 and with both now on Disney Plus, they were good indicators of what to expect from the third entry to the James Gunn films.
AdvertisementThere’s a little less pressure on Guardians of the Galaxy 3 with it being the series’ swan song and not having to introduce the next big Thanos-level super villain. However, it’s been a troubled year for Marvel, which appears to have resulted in a slightly altered release plan for Quantumania.

The box office takings for Ant-Man 3 were lower than the previous two films by a fairly chunky volume. Phase 4 had some big-hitting flicks like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Spider-Man No Way Home, but there were also questions about the success of Eternals and Thor Love and Thunder.
Marvel has still got a lot to look forward to, though, with The Marvels out towards the end of 2023 and the buildup to Avengers The Kang Dynasty in 2025. And Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 will see the team heading out on another huge mission to save the universe, chasing down their past in one final mission.
Clearly, Marvel wanted to play their cards close to their chests on this one, and we’re not keen on spoilers either, but the trailers have shown us that the team will have to battle it out with both the High Evolutionary and Adam Warlock. These are two huge characters from the comics, so it’s one of the most anticipated films for Disney Plus this year after Avatar The Way of Water.
Disney Plus release date
AdvertisementGuardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 will be coming to Disney Plus on August 2nd, 2023. With all of the other films to base our initial projections on, we already a pretty good insight into the possible release date for the movie. It came out in cinemas on May 5th, 2023, so the gap to streaming is a little under three months.
The best example we had for the release was Black Panther Wakanda Forever, which came out on the big screen in November 2022. It then arrived on Disney+ at the start of February 2023, so if you use this as a framework for Guardians 3 then we were looking at August 2023 for it to stream anyway.

However, things didn’t go a similar way with Avatar 2, which came out in December 2022 and didn’t come out on Disney Plus until early June 2023. It was made by 20th Century Studios and like Marvel Studios, it’s owned by the Walt Disney Company.
That means that it should have followed a similar pattern as Black Panther 2, but the fact that it hasn’t means that there might be more discretion going forward. A lot of this comes down to the fact that The Way of Water has been ridiculously successful at the box office, so it could be an outlier that has no impact on anything else.
AdvertisementWe’ll know a lot more when we find out exactly when Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania will be coming out on Disney Plus. If it stacks up with our May projections that it means that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 should go a similar way.
However, if it ends up being June or beyond then it’s a sign that Disney will be spreading things out a little more going forward. This sort of makes sense to give home media more space to get results before it becomes available to stream for free for subscribers.
We already know that Ant-Man 3 is due to arrive on DVD, Blu-ray and digital in the US on May 26th, 2016, so there’s not too long to wait for an announcement about Disney+. Admittedly, the fact that it hasn’t had a great result in cinemas compared to previous films in the series could mean that it isn’t an exact model for Guardians 3.
For example, if the third entry in the James Gunn series goes on to be a big box office smash with solid reviews then it could decide to go with a similar model to Avatar 2. It’s got the majority of May to itself in terms of big movie releases with the exception of Fast X later in the month.
AdvertisementHowever, things get busier in June with Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse, Transformers Rise of the Beasts, The Flash and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny coming out, so the tail off should start then. Will Guardians of the galaxy come out on Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime?
You can take Netflix out of the equation pretty quickly with no ties between the competing streaming services. Gone are the days of Disney or Marvel productions being options for Netflix, so it’s nigh-on impossible for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 to come out on the platform.
It’s a similar story for Amazon Prime’s streaming service, but it will go on to get the rental and digital purchase options around the same date as it’s release on Disney Plus. It’ll also get the DVD, Blu-ray and 4K versions of the film to sell, so there are at least a few more options for Amazon Prime video.
In terms of Hulu, it’s highly unlikely that it’ll be on its standard package, but it’s part owned by the Walt Disney Company, so there’s a bundle to add to your subscription. This pretty much bolts on the Plus streaming service onto your subscription for a fee, so it would give you Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 with the same projections as above.
