When will the first Nintendo Direct take place?

In terms of the very next Nintendo Direct, we’ve got a very good historical president to follow with the big N being fairly consistent with their first big updates for the last few years. Going all the way back to 2019, we’ve have the very first Nintendo Direct of the year in February.

If that isn’t enough to hand our hats on, you can also add in the fact that the first Direct in 2018 way in early March. When you look at six years of correlating information it’s easy to forecast that the next Nintendo Direct in 2024 will be in February with a minor possibility of it slipping into March.

Going deeper, we can also give you an estimate of the date for the next big presentation from Nintendo. 2019 was on the 13th Feb, 2020 the 20th, 2021 the 17th, ’22 the 9th and last year’s Direct came out on the 8th February.

These dates are in close proximity to mid-term holidays in both the US and UK, so we’re hoping this will be a trend that Nintendo follows again in 2024. However, you can add to that the release date for Mario Vs. Donkey Kong on February 16th 2024, which hinted at an earlier date for the next Nintendo Direct.

The Japanese gaming giant is definitely going to want to feature the game at least a little in its first presentation of the year, so it makes sense to pitch this ahead of the game launch. There’s also Princess Peach Showtime in March, so it makes sense to give both of these title at least a little of the limelight.

Going deeper still, there’s also a trend for February Nintendo Direct presentations to release on a Wednesday. When you put all of that together, that left us with February 7th 2024 as the only Wednesday in the month with enough time before the release of Mario Vs. Donkey Kong. However, that date has come and gone, so that just leaves Wednesday the 14th.

So we have the likely date to aim for, but there are a few anomalies that could possible derail this, which we’ll discuss a little more further down the page. They’re not huge and if we had to stick our necks out we’d have to say that they’re on the lower end of the possibility spectrum, but they’re worth checking.

What time will the next Nintendo Direct presentation take place?

Again, there’s a fair bit of history back things up, but it looks like the February 2024 Nintendo Direct will take place around 2pm Pacific Time. This is equivalent to 5pm Eastern Time and 10pm over here in the UK.

This is the timeline that we had for last year’s February Direct and it makes sense for this to be the case once again. The US is the most important geographical location for Nintendo, so putting the video presentation out in the afternoon gives it the most chance of getting in front of the most eyeballs.

What can we expect from the next Nintendo Direct in 2024?

This is the big question on everyone’s lips this year with a lot of unknown variables in play. There are some guarantees, though. Firstly, we’re bound to get a little feature on both Mario Vs. Donkey Kong and Princess Peach Showtime in very least.

In addition that, we should get to see some of the other confirmed games we have coming out in 2024. Other than the two mentioned above, we know that we’ll be getting Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD some time between Easter and the Summer and then that’ll be followed by the Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door remake, so they should be in the mix.

In terms of smaller, third party titles confirmed for 2024, we’ve got South Park: Snow Day!, Little Kitty, Big City, Little Nightmares III, and Tintin Reporter: Cigars of the Pharoa. Any of these could feature during the next Nintendo Direct, but the first two are the biggest possibilities.

What we don’t know for sure is what new announcements, if any, will feature in the presentation. The biggest of these would be a tease of the next Nintendo console, which would be the successor for the hugely popular Switch.

Everything is pointing to a launch later in 2024, so it’s definitely a possibility, but it’s hard to say for sure if it will be announced in the next presentation. You can read more about the latest details for the Super Switch or Switch 2 console with the link below.

A more solid bet is getting to see Wave 2 of the Splatoon 3 expansion, which is due out by December 31st, 2024. This will be the campaign element of the DLC, so we should get to see some of the action if it features.

Other maybes include finally getting to see Metroid Prime 4, something new from the Zelda (Ocarina of Time remastered gets our vote) and a new 3D Mario game. You can take all of this with a pinch of salt, but we’re bound to get at least some of this in 2024, so it’s going to be interesting to see how it all pans out.

What about Pokémon?

For Pokémon fans, the reality is that Nintendo Direct presentations don’t tend to feature the franchise. This is usually done with specific Pokémon presentations and we’ll probably get one of the these a month or so after the next Direct.

This should tell us about the next Pokémon game and what console it will release on. You can read more about our take on what this might be with the link below, but in general we’re expecting either a remake or a sequel to Legends.

Possible bumps in the Nintendo Direct roadmap

While there’s a lot to support the next Nintendo Direct presentation being in early February, there are some complications this year. These have got the possibility to send the playbook out the window, so all bets are off at the moment.

A possible launch for the next Nintendo Switch console could mean that we don’t get a presentation in February at all and that the big N will be saving it until they’ve got everything ready. This could mean that the Feb presentation is bumped entirely in favor of trailers and feature videos for Mario Vs. Donkey Kong and Princess Peach Showtime.

If the Super Switch/Switch 2 is arriving in 2024 then it’s bound to get a Direct presentation all to itself, so this could well go on to be the next one. If that’s the case then it could either be March to tie in with the bigger holiday period around Easter, or even as late as June, 2024.

However, the most likely approach is for the Feb presentation to be games focused and for a separate console announcement Direct to follow later in the year. Obviously, we’d love to know more about the next console as early as possible, so it would be great to see it in Q1 this year, but it’s 50:50 at best.

What will be the next Nintendo Direct presentations after February?

In a normal year, we usually get the first presentation in February, followed by another in June – coinciding with the old E3 days – and then the last Nintendo Direct in September. That should be the case again in 2024, but with the added complexity of the hardware news, we could see things go a little differently.

If the rumors are true about the next console and we’ll be getting it in Autumn or Winter then it makes sense to get the news out as early as possible. Saving it for a presentation in June might be a bit too late, so for us it makes sense to tease it in February before giving it a full presentation in June and then another in September just before the launch.

We’ll get some of the answers in early February, so there isn’t that much time to wait. Either way, we’ll update things here to keep up with the latest for the next Nintendo Direct presentation in 2024.
