With the recent release of the third game in the series we know a lot more about the future direction for Insomniac’s massive open world comic book adventure, so here’s a look ahead at what will be the next Spider-Man game. With plenty of Easter eggs and teasers in the third game and things still to pick up on from the first two, here is everything you need to know.
If you haven’t completed Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and it’s predecessors then it’s worth bearing in mind that we will be talking about pretty big story elements from the games. If you really are trying to go spoiler free until you get to the end then you might want to give this a miss and return when you’re ready.
AdvertisementFor everyone else, we’ve put together a set of options for what might be the next Spider-Man game, including a few notes on what we’re hoping to see in the DLC. Some of these are pretty wild so it’ll be crazy if they actually come off, but either way Spider-Man fans are definitely going to be in for more treats in the coming years.

Option #1: We get a sequel to Marvel Spider-Man Miles Morales next
At the end of Marvel Spider-Man 2 there’s a pretty big indicator that the next game in the series will be a sequel to 2020s miles Morales spin-off. After you defeat Venom, Peter tells Miles that he needs to take some time away from his Spider-Man duties and try to sort out his life a little with MJ moving in with him and not much in the way of of a steady income at the moment for either of them.
Miles tells Peter not to worry and that he’s got this, so we’re pretty sure that the next Spider-Man game will be a return to solo web swinging. If that’s the case then the question is what the story will be about and how it all could come together with a new villain.

It seems to us to be a given that it needs to be separate to everything to do with Harry and Norman Osborne now that the Venom symbiote has been finished. They’re probably have a few teasers in another Miles game, but it doesn’t fit for them to have the big Green Goblin moment without Peter.
We’ve had The Tinkerer in Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Moralis, so we’re expecting something similar to this for the sequel where they take a more minor villain from the rogues gallery and turning it into something bigger than it has ever been before. We’ve had a lot of villains in the mix in the three games, so that pretty much rules out all of those and with Miles and Martin Li moving on from their shared dark past, we’re definitely expecting something completely new.
AdvertisementWith Miles’s mum in politics, it’s possible that this could be a big part of the game with a potential rival turning out to be a big villain in some way. This helps keep its focus on the family aspects of the game, as well as giving the story more emotional impact to deliver a concept that’s worthy of the previous games in the series.
One option for the villain is Tarantula, aka Anton Miguel Rodriguez, which would give us a political extremist angle. It would be a divergence in the back story to the comics, but it would follow a similar example from The Tinkerer in Spider-Man Miles Morales. Tarantula could easily be taken to the next level if the character gets bitten by a similar spider to the one that transformed Peter Parker and Miles.
Another angel is that it’s theoretically possible that we could see a previous villain returning to the fore with Kingpin being the biggest option. His reputation is probably too tarnished to be in with the chance of running for any elections, but he could easily sponsor somebody from his place in the Raft prison in a bid of re-secure his place at the head of the New York criminal underworld.
This would tie in well with the success of Spider-Man Into The Spider-verse, which pitted Miles against the Kingpin as they wrestle for control of the multi-dimensional device. Considering how well it worked for the movie, he could definitely be used to make the next game an absolute banger.

Wilson Fisk would need to do some pretty extreme things to secure some new abilities to elevate him to something more than the very first boss of Marvel’s Spider-Man in 2018. There’s been a lot of cool tech, science and abilities introduced since then, so he could easily secure some of this to build himself up to be a credible big bad for the next game.
Option 2: The next Spider-Man game will be something completely different
There have been murmurings in the press of at least the potential for a Venom breakaway title and while there’s nothing confirmed as of yes it is a slight possibility. The problem with this is that it would kind of scupper the emotional tie-in for a sequel to Marvel Spider-Man 2, because Harry is still in a coma, as you can see at the end of the final boss fight with Venom, and Norman is probably going to build himself up to be the Green goblin.

Obviously, there are story mechanics that Insomniac Games could use to circumvent all of this by simply giving a small piece of surviving Venom symbiote to someone like Eddie Brock, which has done pretty well for the Tom Hardy Venom movies. It would tie in well with the comics too, so there’s at least a chance for this could come to pass, but we’ll have to wait and see.
In addition to the potential of Venom being the next game in the series, another option is to follow the Black Cat’s story in Paris somehow. In the mission Make Your Own Choices (see it in full below), you help Felicia escape Kraven the Hunter. She then uses a magical portal to travel to Paris to save her girlfriend, so it’s conceivable there could be a game focusing on this.
Another option is that this could well be a part of the DLC, so we’ll pick this up in a bit more detail in the section at the bottom of the page. However, the point is that the game has got a very strong engine with enjoyable fight mechanics that could translate to another setting and slightly different abilities.
We’ve had three games now set in New York, so it would be cool to get a new location, either with one of the main characters, or with Venom, Felicia or even Mister Negative following his half reprieve in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Paris would be particularly impressive, but at the same time a setting in China with Martin Li would work well too with Shanghai getting our personal shout from a visual point of view.
AdvertisementWhether or not any of these are actually viable is up for judicious debate, and it would take a lot to live up to the sheer popularity of the Spider-Man series, so it might be a bit too much of a punt for a full game. The exception is probably Venom, and with Carnage getting teased in Spider-Man 2’s The Flame story arc there’s definitely enough scope for this to happen.

Again, this could just be a part of the DLC, so there are more notes in the section at the bottom of the page, but for now it feels like there’s at least the possibility of more from these characters in the future of the series. We’d definitely play a Black Cat game set in Paris, but drop us a comment below to let us know if you’re with us.
Option #3: We get a sequel to Marvel Spider-Man 2 next
Insomniac Games has got a lot on its plate over the coming years with Wolverine to finish before returning to the Spider-Man series, so it’s possible that they might have to scale things back a little. If that’s the case then instead of having two breakaway Spider-Man games, or even three, they might just keep it to the one and go straight in with the Harry and Norman Osborne Green goblin story arc.
We’re pretty sure that this has the least potential in terms of our options for the next Spider-Man game, but we wanted to out it in just in case the manpower constraints are bigger than we expect. There’s definitely going to be a sequel to the 2023 title, but we’ll be surprised if it goes on to be the next game just because there’s so much more to do before then.
It definitely makes more sense to do another solo Miles Morales game next, but if they do decide to go for a direct sequel to the third game then it could just start out as being Miles as the main character in the first half of the game. This would tie in with what the story says about Peter taking a break again, but then as things start to intensify he’ll get pulled back into the superhero action as the Green Goblin intensifies the threat level.
We still think this is a low possibility, but the other thing to take into account is that it’s entirely possible that we might get a solo Miles Morales game next followed by a sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 that still doesn’t tackle the whole Green Goblin thing. It’s been the dangled carrot since the very first game, so it could well continue to be a tease in the next two games. If Insomniac decides to make Carnage the next big bad villain in the main series then they could easily string thing out for longer.

For us, it probably wouldn’t be a good move, because it all feel too similar to Spider-Man 2 with Venom as the main threat. Plus, it’ll have less emotional connection with Carnage being just some random maniac. It definitely sits better as a DLC option, but you never know how things are going to develop. It just doesn’t seem like the way to go for us.
What about the next DLC?
We’ve touched on elements of the DLC for Marvel’s Spider-Man game throughout the details above, but hopefully we’ll have some announcements from the developers and Sony PlayStation sometime in the not-too distant future. Nothing has been confirmed as of yet, so it’s possible that we won’t get any DLC, which was the case for 2020s Miles Morales.
However, assuming that there will be DLC then there are a number of story arcs that were teased in the third game in the series that could well go on to be the starting points for the expansion. This includes the reveal of the Chameleon as a potential villain in operation in New York, the whole Carnage reveal, Felicia in Paris and Mister Negative’s continued efforts to reprieve himself for his actions in the first game.
Martin Li appeared to relinquish his powers to Miles in Spider-Man 2, but it’s entirely possible that they could return somehow. The character really shined in MSM2, so there’s at least the scope for him to do more in the future.
AdvertisementCombined, this would be the four DLC elements matching the expansion that was released for the very first game. All of these would be amazing in themselves, so it’ll be interesting to see whether or not they go on to be included, but our personal favorites is the Black Cat in Paris, which would be amazing.
As mentioned above, it would give us a whole new location to travel around and Paris is such a stunning city so it would be jaw-dropping with the power of the PS5 behind us. It would be a very different proposition to the rest of Marvel’s Spider-Man, so it would make for a fun departure from everything else that we’ve done so far.
It’s a similar story for some of the other elements with the Martin Li arc being best told from his point of view. This could still be in New York, but as mentioned above it would be cool to give it a new location too. Shanghai and Paris would be mind-blowing for DLC and probably ramp up the sales massively, but to create whole new maps for both of these massive cities might be a stretch too far, even for Insomniac Games.
The chameleon and carnage plots would be a lot easier to do in New York City, so these are our big shouts for the DLC. The Flame builds to a combination with the symbiote he made off with in Marvel Spider-Man 2 and the chameleon takes up Kraven the Hunters efforts to tame Spider-Man. There’s definitely a lot of potential in all of this, so we can’t wait to see how it all shapes up when the full announcement is revealed.
