What will be the next Monster Hunter game?

What will be the next Monster Hunter game

If you’ve run out of hunts to head out on, you might be wondering what will be the next Monster Hunter game on the horizon. The bad news is that it will probably be a while before the next big console game in the series, but there is something big coming way before then.

Officially speaking, the last main series game was Monster Hunter Rise, which was a Nintendo Switch exclusive before it eventually ported to PC, Xbox One, Series X/S and PlayStation 4 & 5. However, a lot of fans will be looking back on Monster Hunter World (MHW) as the title they most want the next game to be based on.

It came out in 2018 and set a new bar for the franchise with some of the best gameplay we’ve seen and huge areas to explore. It was also the first game to get such impressive graphics with a lot of the titles before it being focused on Nintendo consoles or hand-held systems.

It was also the most popular game in the series, so the next big Monster Hunter game would ideally follow on from that. Rise did pretty well too, but World seems to have the edge in terms of popularity, so it would make a great framework for what will ideally be a new gen experience for the series.

As mentioned above, the next Monster Hunter game won’t be the main series console experience, but there is some consolation. Capcom has teamed up with mobile gaming giant Niantic to create Monster Hunter Now, which will be launching on both Android and iPhone devices.

The release date is scheduled for September 14th, 2023 and you can pre-register for the game to get rewards when it drops. The rewards are tied to the number of people that pre-register and with 2 million already on the roster the latest reward unlock was makeup and item box expansions.

In case you don’t know Niantic, its the behemoth behind Pokémon Go, so Monster Hunter No will be a similar experience where you hunt in the real world. This means playing on your smart phone and walking about to find monsters to hunt, resulting in impressive looking battles when you catch up with them.

If you’re not too sure about what to expect, you can check out the teaser trailer video below. In addition to some huge CGI at the beginning, you can also see the gameplay, which looks like it could be pretty good with proper Monster Hunter battles.

What will be the next big Monster Hunter game on consoles?

While the very next Monster Hunter game will be Monster Hunter Now, that might be what you’re looking for. The mobile game will do a lot to bridge the gap between main series titles, but there are bound to be plenty of fans craving a new game in the series for the latest consoles.

This is all the more true when you take into account the success and expectations that Monster Hunter World delivered. Rise was a solid title, but it felt a bit like a step down from the graphical intensity and gameplay of World, so you might be craving a sequel.

MHW came out in 2018, so we’re already up to a gap of five years, which is the usual time period Capcom takes between titles. However, with Rise out in 2021 that means that we might not see a new main series game next until 2026, which feels like a long way away.

There are no other Monster Hunter games confirmed as of yet other than Now, so we can fairly confidently rule out most of 2024 in the very least. That means that even with a fair wind and a lot of hope we’re probably looking at a minimum of 2025 before we get to play the next console game.

With the time period covered, you might be wondering what to expect from a Monster Hunter World sequel, if that is the route that Capcom takes. The safest bet is that it will be a direct sequel with a new location, bringing new and old monsters together for you to battle against, including the all important final boss fight.

However, it would be cool if they pushed the boat out and went even further The best that we can come up with is Monster Hunter Galactic, which would fuse the hunting concept with the multi-world experience of No Man’s Sky or Starfield. It would mean that it would have to be a PS5, Xbox Series X/S and high-spec PC release to be able to deliver the experience.

This means once again dropping Nintendo, which is what Capcom had to do with Monster Hunter World. However, with the possibility of the next Nintendo console on the horizon, it’s definitely possible that it could start by porting the first game and the new title if the technology is there to support it from Nintendo.

If the programmatic and pre-built monsters and worlds concept of a galactic Monster Hunter game is a bit of a stretch, Capcom could go smaller, but still deliver something bigger than MHW. A continental equivalent could work well on new gen consoles and the next Nintendo console if it’s powerful enough.

Another approach would be to alter the time period for the next game. Setting it in a more technologically advanced society might be interesting in terms of the weaponry, armor and upgrade options that you have, as well as the mobility side of the equation to bring something new to the series.

What about the next Monster Hunter Stories game?

The Monster Hunter Stories series is only two games strong and it’s nowhere near as successful as the main games, so it’s possible we won’t see any more of them. However, if it did return it would need to elevate the environment and graphics from 2, which came out in 2021 as a Nintendo Switch exclusive.

The game itself was fun enough with lots of memorable moments, characters and story arcs, but the pixels showed way too much for vast amounts of the game. It tried to do something similar to the open world brilliance of The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, but sadly didn’t come close.

If there was ever a Monster Hunter Stories 3 it would need to get the same quality treatment that World got three years before it. For us, it could easily be in the same region as the 2nd game from the spin-off with the same characters, but giving us a whole new mysterious, earth-shattering development to face.

The gap between 1 and 2 was five years, so it’s very doubtful that this will be the next Monster Hunter game after Now, but it might not be too far off. That would also put it in 2026 if everything follows convention, but it makes way more sense to focus on one game in a year, so we’ll have to wait to see how Capcom plays things on the back of it’s big mobile game this year.
