What will be the next Assassin’s Creed game

What will be the next Assassin's Creed game

If you’ve just played Assassin’s Creed Mirage then you might be wondering will will be the next game in the series from Ubisoft. Having delivered a minor gem of a stealth action adventure game, it’s time to look at what direction they’ll be going in next and when to expect it.

Ubisoft has been pretty busy diversifying recently, which has kind of led to some challenges for the company in a tough economic patch for the gaming industry. However, it sounds liek it’ll be consolidating things a little going forward and focusing on its core titles a little more, which means Assassin’s Creed is probably going back to the top of the pile int he coming years.

We’ve still got Avatar Frontiers of Pandora to come from Ubisoft this year and then there’s Star Wars Outlaws due out next year, but after that we’re expecting it to refocus quite a lot. We already know that there are a few Assassin’s Creed projects under way, so here’s everything we know about what’s coming quietly down the road next.

Options 1… The next Assassin’s Creed game will be red

If Ubisoft opt to go big for the next Assassin’s Creed game then it will probably be Red, which is set in Feudal Japan. There’s a big “but” in the form of option 2 below, but as that’s a mobile option, Assassin’s Creed Red will probably be the next big console and PC game in the series.

It sounds like it’s shaping up to be something more akin to Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla, as opposed to Assassin’s Creed Mirage, so it definitely makes sense to be the next title. That should give us large portions of the Japan to explore with a time period between the 12th and the 14th century (roughly between 300-500 years after Mirage and Valhalla).

We’re hoping the success of the stealth action in Mirage means that we’ll get something closer to a hybrid between the sneak-o-thon and the RPG action representing the two sides of the AC coin. It makes sense when you look at the success of Ghost of Tsushima, which is set in Japan towards the end of the feudal state.

The counterargument for Assassin’s Creed Red being the next game in the series is that we haven’t really seen much from it. Apart from the reveal video below it’s been pretty quiet, compared to option two below, which has already has its first closed beta test and gameplay trailer.

What we can take from the reveal is that the focus appears to be more on a shinobi assassin lead character, compared to the samurai of Ghost of Tsushima. The fact that it’s a ninja is another good sign that there will be plenty of stealth in Assassin’s Creed Codename Red.

Option 2… The next Assassin’s Creed game could be Jade

There’s a very good chance that the next Assassin’s Creed game will be the open world mobile adventure that is Jade. As mentioned above it’s had closed beta 1 already and it’ll soon be doing a second round, so things are pretty advanced in terms of the development.

The fact that we already have a gameplay trailer is another good sign that it’s getting near completion. There were also plenty of pictures from Gamescom earlier this year showing gamers playing the game on mobile devices, so it might even be mostly ready with some final polish and tweaks being worked on from the testing feedback.

Jade will be set in China in the 3rd century BC, which is interesting, because this pre-dates Assassin’s Creed Origins, which, if you haven’t played it, is the origin story for the Hidden Ones, the precursors to the Assassin’s Brotherhood. As a result, the main character, Xia, can’t be a member.

However, the Order of the Ancients pre-dates this, so it’s feasible that other people have crossed swords with them before this. Xia appears to be one of them and while he has a hood, his costume doesn’t have any of the Hidden Ones telltale marks, which you can see in the gameplay trailer below.

We’re expecting him to be a guardian of some sort who takes on the might of high powers from the west as trade expands into the recently unified empire. It’s going to be a lot fo fun running along the Great Wall of China and dishing out justice and with so much content already out it could land properly in early 2024 for general release.

It looks like its going to be a free to play game with regular updates, which we’re expecting to be similar to other F2P games like Fortnite. If so then we might be seasons, paid passes for bonus cosmetics and paid cosmetics, but it definitely means a while lot more classic steal, parkour and assassination action that could go on for a long time if it’s a success.

Option 3?!? The next Assassin’s Creed game probably won’t be Hexe, but…

The least likely contender for the next Assassin’s Creed game is Hexe, which was announced at the same time as Red. It’s possible that is could leapfrog it, but it just doesn’t make sense to add in another “different” style of AC game into the mix so soon after Mirage and with Jade coming down the road too.

If that isn’t enough to push it back a little, the details from Ubisoft on Assassin’s Creed Hexe are very slim on the ground; even more so than Red. All we’ve seen so far is the AC logo made out twigs and the name, which hints at the prospect of a setting in Europe or the United States during the witch trials.

If it’s set in Salem then that would make it the 17th century, which is roughly a hundred year prior to Assassin’s Creed III. This might be a bit too close for comfort and with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla already covering large parts of the Britain, that makes Europe the best location shout.

Germany had a lot of witch hunting activity, so that’s a good possibility, which would place it in the 16th to the 17th century. It’ll be interesting to see how dark, mystical and magical things get, or if it will still try to stay grounded in the existing universe, but with the historical story as its backdrop.

The final word

With everything that we’ve gone through above, it looks like the next Assassin’s Creed game will be the mobile free to play game, Jade. However, the next big console title will probably be Assassin’s Creed Red with a potential release towards the end of 2024.

That should put Assassin’s Creed Hexe into 2025 and we’ll see how big the mobile success of Jade is to get an idea about how long it might last. Ubisoft has been trying to land a big free to play game for a while without much success, but this one stands a better chance than the others.
