What is the power Baylan Skoll is searching for in Ahsoka

The opening season of Ahsoka has set a lot of precedents so far and with as we try to answer what is the power Baylan Skoll is searching for we find a whole new set. A lot of this stems from the link with the Nightsister Witches of Dathomir and their origins, so we’ll take you through the entire galaxy hopping roller-coaster.

Star Wars history got a huge disturbance in Episode 6 of Ahsoka as Morgan Elsbeth dropped out of inter-galactic space flight to glimpse Deridea. In one short sentence, she reshaped the history of the Nightsister of Dathomir and laid the foundation for some as-yet unknown secret power.

It’s this power that Baylan Skoll thinks that he can harness as he admitted to his apprentice, Shin Hati, that it’s the purpose for his part in the plan. If that isn’t enough to get everyone wondering, he then goes on to tell her that what he seeks is the beginning, so there’s clearly some secret origin details we’re going to get before Ahsoka finishes.

What are the Nightsisters and where does their power come from?

Up until now, we had thought that the origin of the Witches and the Dark Side-wielding Nightsister clan, was on their home planet of Dathomir. In the expanded universe, the Witches stem from a rogue Jedi that had been sent to the planet in exile by the Jedi Council.

She formed a new matriarchal society and her former Jedi ways morphed into the green magic that you can see Morgan and the Great Mothers using. It’s essentially the Force, but presented in a different way, so the Witches are just harnessing that power (both Light and Dark) to do what they do.

Where things get a little unclear is when Morgan talks about their destination of Peridea. She describes it as the ancient home world of her ancestors, the Dathomiri. The show doesn’t go into too much detail, but it seems to imply that this predates the previous origin story with the rogue Jedi on Dathomir.

If that’s the case then either we’re getting a new cannon origin story for the Witches, or there’s more to their kind than what transpired on Dathomir. The fact that Morgan uses the term ancient home world is definitely a good indicator that it predates the previous origin story.

She goes on further to say that her people rode the Purrgil space wales between galaxies “in the days before time was counted”. All of this implies that the magical style of the Witches’ use of the Force goes back before the rogue Jedi that formed the society on Dathomir.

One explanation is that the rogue Jedi was a descendant of these Dathomiri galaxy-hopping travellers and joined the Jedi Order, but kept some of her ancestry. When she was exiled, she returned to her previous teachings and created a society on Dathomir, inspired by her origins.

Hopefully, we’ll get a few more details in the remaining two episodes of Ahsoka, but whatever these turn out to be, they’re clearly linked to the power that Baylan Skoll is searching for. If this is the rightful home world of the Dathomir Witches then the implication is that something there is of interest to the former Jedi general and his apprentice.

What power might Baylan Skoll think is on Peridea?

The key to the power that Baylan is searching for on Peridea is that he says what he seeks is the “beginning”, so that he can bring the cycle of power struggles in the galaxy to an end. For us, that kind of implies that he’s searching for a way to harness Mortis, the mystical world that resides within the Force.

We’ve already seen the dream-like plane in the previous episode when Ahsoka met Anakin on the light bridge and battles him to return to life. It’s possible that there is a conduit to Mortis on Peridea or some details about how to access it, which could allow Baylan to access it at will.

If you haven’t seen any of the Clone Wars series, it’s where Mortis was introduced. It was presided over by The Father, who’s son represented the Dark Side and his Daughter the Light.

However, when his health began to fail he tried to recruit Anakin to replace him to maintain balance in Mortis. Anakin declined and in the struggle the entire family perished, which in itself brought balance to the Force in Mortis.

Morgan Elspeth talked about taking everything from the ancient catacombs with them, which would take three cycles to complete. In these, Baylan might either find a portal to Mortis or a codex to access it, which would be the power and beginnings that he’s looking for.
