We Are Scientists have been pretty much AWOL since the release of their fourth album, Barbara, in 2010 along with the lead single, Rules. Now they’re starting to crank up the winch again to pull themselves back into the swing of things with talk of new material for 2013 in advance of a later fifth album release.
The new material in question is a 7-inch record featuring two new songs from the California-based band, Something About You and Let Me Win?, which are also available to for download. The release is accompanied the addition of, to quote Keith and Chris, a t-shirt and bag that are “both somehow badass and summery at the same time”, which is a pretty good description for the two new songs.
Something About You combines the well trodden indie-pop sounds of We Are Scientists with a Beach Boys-esque summertime feel. It’s a catchy pop track that’s a timely addition to the summer months. The only thing it’s missing is a little ringing surf guitar to twist the cap off the tune.
Let Me Win, however, is a slowdown psych track with a little lean in the direction of the Beatles. The organ furled backdrop is class and shlomo instrumental opened middle section brings a good level of variation to the song (listen to the stream below to hear for yourself).
It’s a great return for the guys that lot up the naughtiest with the likes of After Hours, Nobody Move, Nobody Gets Hurt, It’s A Hit and The Great Escape. It also signals the coming of a new album, which We Are Scientists have now finished recording, but with “a lot of details to work through before a release date will even be in sight”, they’ve opted to put out the 7-inch as sounding of things to come. Our bet is early 2014.
The band is also concluding a small series of UK gigs at the moment too, with the new material featuring in their sets. They’re playing a sold out gig at the Gorilla in Manchester tonight (30th July 2013) before moving onto Preston’s 53 Degrees tomorrow night. They’re also playing at the Indiependence Festival in Cork on the 2nd August and The Limelight 2 in Belfast on the 3rd.
