With the Top Gun 2 UK release date now scheduled for 2022, as Tom Cruise approaches his 60th birthday, the question is whether or not they’ve left things just a little too late for the return of Maverick to the big screen. However, there are more than enough fans of the original looking forward to watching the sequel, so here’s the latest news on the film, including what we know about the story synopsis, age rating and our parents guide.
The first film had its cinematic release in 1986 when Cruise was in his mid twenties and while there are no details in terms of how far into Maverick’s future it’s set, it needs to be pretty distant to fit the 30 years outside the film. The miraculous ageing properties of Tom Cruise’s face give it a little artistic license, and in all fairness movie magic will go a long way, so it’s going to be interesting to see how it all comes together.
AdvertisementOne thing is for sure, though, after the year the whole world has just had, we probably all feel the need… the need for speed. Or at least a little distraction from the craziness, so getting to see Maverick tear up the skies again will probably work out well. It’s just a shame it’s been delayed a little further now.
Cast
With the release just around the corner we know a lot more about the cast in addition to Tom Cruise reprising his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. The cast also includes Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro and Lewis Pullman as the new flight aces training at Miramar.
AdvertisementJennifer Connoly is Pete’s new love interest, while Jon Hamm and Ed Harris join the cast as his senior commanders. He’ll also have to answer to Val Kilmer who returns as Iceman, who is now a senior Admiral in the US Navy.
Top Gun 2 UK release date
There was a lot of secrecy surrounding the film, especially in terms of the story synopsis, but the Top Gun 2 UK release date has now been moved to 2022. Obviously, the global COVID pandemic is the reason for this. It was initially slated for Friday the 17th July 2020, so it will work out as a delay of just under two years. The latest date change for the UK moves the film to the 25th May 2022.
That aligns things closely with the USA and Canada release on the 27th. It was previously due to come out much earlier in the UK than in the US, which was probably linked to Thanksgiving Day being a huge target for cinema releases. However, now it looks like both sides of the Atlantic will see the film on the big screen towards the end of May 2022.
There’s not that much competition at the box office in terms of new films out on that weekend, so Maverick should take the number 1 spot. Bob’s Burger The Movie will be hitting the big screen, which we’re looking forward to, but it’s unlikely to make much of a dent on the highly anticipated Tom Cruise sequel. It will then aim for a DVD, Blu-ray and digital release date around September 2022.

Age rating and parents guide
Both Vue Cinemas and Cineworld had the film with a 12A certificate ahead of The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) officially confirming it as the Top Gun 2 age rating for the UK with the release date in sight. The 12 certification for the first film was a pretty good guide for what to expect from the sequel and the details from Vue and Cineworld seem to have confirmed this early. The parents guide notes for the 1986 film were a single use of strong language, moderate sex scenes and references.
The biggest reasons for the 12 rating for the first film was the steamy romance and with nostalgia in mind there’s bound to be something similar in Maverick. The other reason would have been the tragic death of Goose, who crashes pretty spectacularly into the see while on a mission.
We’ll update you with more details on the film as they get confirmed. You can also check out our movie news section to keep tabs on the latest upcoming films, or visit the Paramount Pictures website at https://www.paramount.com/movies/top-gun-maverick.
AdvertisementAs with the age rating, the runtime for the film hasn’t been announced and while you can’t really read too much into the length of Top Gun – 1hr, 50 minutes – it probably will be around the 2hr mark. We’ll update with more details as they’re announced.
Story synopsis
Details are fairly thin on the ground for the story synopsis, but the teaser trailer below gives a few snippets away. Maverick has essentially been passed over for promotion throughout his now long career in the US Air Force despite his advanced flight skills. The addition of Miles Teller to the cast would also hint at a new group of recruits coming through the ranks with Maverick acting as their instructor or life mentor or something along those lines.
As mentioned in the parents guide and age rating section, there’s bound to be a romantic scene, so you’re probably looking at Jennifer Connolly as Maverick’s love interest. And then in terms of the enemy the US faces in Top Gun 2 the trailer seems to imply that it’s just another one of life’s mysteries. All we know for sure is that someone definitely feels the need for speed.
Top Gun 2 teaser trailer
The age rating for the trailer above for Top Gun 2 Maverick is PG, but we’re not expecting that to have much impact on the parents guide for the film release.
