Everyone should read To Kill A Mocking Bird, no matter what the people on the GCSE syllabus might say, and for anyone that’s as much of a fan of the Harper Lee classic, the good news is that you’ll be able to see it at a theatre near you with 2014 and 2014 UK tour dates announced. Bringing the Pulitzer Prize winning novel to regional theatres throughout Britain, the Regent’s Park Theatre transfer should be as much of a hit on the road as it has been for its London shows.
Full details of all of the tour dates are below, but things will be kicking off on the 16th September 2014 at The Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury following the close of the Open Air Theatre performances on the 13th September 2014. It will go on to show at another 19 theatres around the UK as part of the tour, including Cardiff’s New Theatre, The Wycombe Swan Theatre in Wycombe, the Cambridge Arts Theatre, the New Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham, Bath’s Theatre Royal, King’s Theatre in Edinburgh and Salford’s The Lowry.
The Christopher Sergel adapted production first took to the stage in 2013 at the Open Air Theatre in London’s Regent’s Park and following critical acclaim and a pretty packed park every night of the show, it was confirmed that the play would be returning to the venue in 2014 (find out more about the Open Air Theatre production of To Kill A Mocking Bird). It’s also inspired the extended UK tour, which takes the show right the way through until May 2015.
The play is an adaptation of Harper Lee’s Deep South story of racial injustice and victimisation in the small town of Maycombe, Alabama. When lawyer Atticus Finch is appointed to represent a man falsely accused of rape he does so with all of his litigation abilities, drawing his daughter, Scout, and son, Jem, into the turmoil of the events. With the vicious town drunk, Bob Ewell, along with a mop of townspeople against him and the presence of the mysterious Boo Radly watching over it all, it’s a dark tale with a strong heart.
The cast for the Regent’s Park production saw Robert Sean Leonard taking on the role of Atticus, Richie Campbell playing Tom Robinson, Daniel Tuite playing Boo Radley and Simon Gregor as the git Bob Ewell. They’re added to by a mix of either Lucy Hutchinson, Izzy Lee or Eleanor Worthington-Cox as Scout and Gus Barry, Callum Henderson or Adam Scotland as Jem. It’s looking like the cast for the UK tour will be the same as the Open Air Theatre production of To Kill A Mockingbird to, so if you’re not able to make the London performances, the regional plays will be very close equivalents.
Tickets prices for the UK tour dates vary depending on which theatre you’re planning to see it at, but in general they range between the £20 and the £30 mark.
