Shattering the fragile hold that DC Comics appeared to have over the box office for later this year, the Thor: Ragnarok teaser trailer has just landed, picking up five million views in a matter of hours. It’s looking pretty impressive with a lot of big moments; not least of all Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, getting shattered to tatters by his new enemy, Hela, like it was made of fragile glass. Check out the trailer below to see all of the action for yourself.
There’ also a scene with Thor dangling in chains, the destruction of Asgard, Thor being banished from the nine realms and getting captured in an electrified net, and finally being forced to fight in Grandmaster’s arena like he’s channeling the spirit of Maximus Decimus Meridius. If that isn’t enough kitchen sink in the mix, Marvel has also included The Incredible Hulk in the teaser trailer with Thor having to go toe-to-toe with the big green Goliath.
Thor: Ragnarok teaser trailer:
Cate Blanchet looks incredible as Hela, with a lot of dark scenes in and among the comedy that features a lot in the teaser trailer. Jeff Goldblum, on the other hand, looks like he’s going to be playing a very sardonic take on Grandmaster, but if anything it appears as though Thor will have to get over his workplace grievance with The Hulk before he can take on either of them.
For anyone not up on their Marvel comic book history, or the Norse mythology behind Thor, Ragnarok is essentially the Norse equivalent of the apocalypse, Hela is the Asgardian goddess of death and ruler of Hel and Niflheim (based on the Norse deity Hel) and Grandmaster is one of the immortal Elders of the Universe, who is obsessed with games and chance. When you throw all of that into the same great big melting pot you get a whole lot of crazy, but it looks like it’s pulling together well.
The comedy lines come thick and fast within the confines of the 1:52 teaser trailer with Thor’s, “I know him, we work together” celebration at the sight of The Hulk being one of the best we’ve ever seen in a superhero film. The choice of song, Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song, works pretty well with the combination of darkness and comedy with the movie taking its cue from Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 when it comes to the importance of great music to a film trailer.
Thor: Ragnarok will be out in the UK on Friday the 27th October 2017, a little ahead of its arrival in the US for some reason, so we’ll get to see it all go down first.
