One of the most popular series in gaming is about to get the Netflix treatment, so here’s the lowdown on The Witcher TV series cast, what it’s about, release date and theme tune. While the project has been in production for a while, the arrival of the teaser trailer below kicked off the hype for the show following the earlier reveal of Henry Cavil, who leads the cast as Gerald Of Rivia.
The game may well be how The Witcher has become so well known, but it originally comes from a series of novels and short stories by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski. The games take their cues from these stories and the Netflix TV series will follow in the same vein, going back to the original source material to build out season one right from the beginning of it all.
UK release date
Netflix hasn’t officially announced the release date as of yet, but there’s more than enough to go on to make a few assumptions about when it will be on in the UK. Firstly, the trailer is complete, which also means that the series is complete also. It also mentions that The Witcher is coming soon, which means it’s definitely going to be out this year. We’re already up to August, which really doesn’t leave that much of the year left.
Secondly, Season 1 of the TV series is going to be one of Netflix’s marquee shows, so it’s definitely going to want it to release during a big time of the year. That essentially leaves just a few options left with Halloween and Christmas being the biggest internationally and Thanksgiving being another option for the US.
However, you can see in the trailer below that there’s a monstrous side to The Witcher, which would link it to a potential Halloween release date as the most likely candidate. Stranger Things Series 2 did just that a couple of years ago coming out on the 27th October, so it’s something that Netflix has done before. We’ll update you here with more info about the release as it’s confirmed.
The Witcher TV series cast
In addition to Henry Cavill in the lead role of Geralt of Rivia, The Witcher cast also includes British actress Freya Allan as Princess Ciri and Anya Chalotra as the sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg. Cannes Film Festival best actress award winner Jodhi May will play Calanthe and Fortitude star Björn Hlynur Haraldsson plays Eist.
The cast is completed by Adam Levy as Mousesack, MyAnna Buring as Tissaia, Mimi Ndiweni as Fringilla, Therica Wilson-Read as Sabrina and Emma Appleton as Renfri, Eamon Farren as Cahir, Joey Batey as Jaskier, Lars Mikkelsen as Stregobor, Royce Pierreson as Istredd, Maciej Musiał as Sir Lazlo, Wilson Radjou-Pujalte as Dara, and Anna Shaffer as Triss.

Theme tune
You can listen to The Witcher TV series theme song in the trailer below as it runs along with the first view of Henry Cavill as Geralt Of Rivia in action. It manages to be tense and magical at the same time as it builds the drama for the show and highlights the fantasy side of what it’s all about.
It has slow moments to begin with before things kicks up a notch to showcase the action that is going to be a big part of Season 1. The song is classical as a whole, but it also sounds fairly modern with little in common with more traditional classical music. The main reason for this is that it has been specifically composed as the title theme to an action fantasy TV series, which it works well for.
The song combines stepping piano notes that give the composition a lot of weight with higher tempo strings that feel like they’ve been inspired by hoof rats in soft earth. This is heightened by the driving percussion, which charges the theme tune up and gives it its memorable heart.
The Witcher TV latest news
Netflix has been trying to play its cards fairly close to its chest in terms of what The Witcher story will be and how much it will compare to either the computer games or the books. The general gist is that Geralt is a monster hunter of epic proportions, but he discovers that it is the people that live in the unnamed Continent that are more vile than the huge and terrifying creatures that he is able to track and fight thanks to the supernatural abilities that he developed when he was young.
The story picks up with Geralt as he meets the sorceress Yennefer, whose power is growing rapidly, and the young princess Ciri, who holds a very dangerous secret. The three must join together to make their way through the intricacies, villains and monsters of the continent to fulfil their destiny. You can see Season 1 over on Netflix.
