The Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2009 Review

The Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition 2009The Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2009 at the Natural History Museum is the highlight of the London museum visit calendar for us with some of the most stunning photography we’ve seen. It’s got everything; skilful art, striking imagery, a vast portfolio and some of the best post exhibition tat on sale in the WPOTY ’09 shop (that’s not a silent “W” by the way, the exhibition is far from wpoty, or wpoo for that matter).

Unlike other reviews you might find, this one’s not going to spoil everything for you. All we’re going to say is that you need to see it to appreciate it. It’s ace. Factamundo! and while we’re obviously long past 2009 now, there’s always another exhibition to look forward to and they’re always among the most memorable in terms of big name exhibitions.

With the original winner’s iconic double-take night shot, poignant photographic messages about the state of the worlds endangered wildlife and all of the amazing children’s entries, it’ll keep you entranced for hours, and then when you finally tare yourself away you can treat yourself to a 32 piece jigsaw of a puffin in freefall on a snowy, wind swept day (or something like that). 2009 was one of the best outings for the exhibition in the last five years or so and while it went on to be tarnished with the winner disqualified for photographing a tame wolf, it takes nothing away from the achievement of the all of the other photographers.

The Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards Exhibition 2009 opened at the Natural History Museum on the 23rd October 2009 and ran all the way through to 11th April 2010. It’s always just enough time to get you interested in entering your own effort for the next competition, but with so many incredible entries it would be a very impressive achievement to make it in among the mix.

Unfortunately, the Natural History Museum archive for the WPY (it’s official acronym by the way) 2009 has been removed, so you can’t see some of the great images anymore. However, luckily you can see a fair few of the best still with Google images of the exhibition entries.
