Elijah Wood (The Last Witch Hunter) and Nicholas Cage (The Croods) are about to throw their collective beret into the ring in the upcoming crime comedy action drama thriller type film, The Trust (2016). It’s got the look of a sleeping monster if the trailer below is anything to go by, and it could go on to be one of the surprise gems of the year with a good combination of style, substance, character development and self-deprecating deadpan humour.
Release date
The film has got a slightly odd release schedule in the US where it is planned to be released on DirecTV on the 14th April 2016, before arriving on the big screen on the 13th May 2016. The UK release date is a little more conventional though, making its way to the big screen on Friday the 27th May 2016. It’ll be out in the UK on the same weekend as Alice Through The Looking Glass, cartoon origin outing Top Cat Begins, The Free State Of Jones and George Clooney thriller, Money Monster, so it’ll have some significant competition for bum cheeks.
Story
The Trust is the story of two corrupt cops who discover a safe that’s hidden in an unconventional way that leads them to think that it’s filled with lucrative contents. Despite the fact that the safe is guarded by a criminal gang, the odd couple hatch a plan to get to it and crack it to take the goodies for themselves. However, as you’d expect, things are far from what they seem and once they’ve stepped into the darkness of the situation they find that there’s a whole lot more corruption and danger than they’d bargained for.
The plot entails a healthy dose of things just going wrong for the bent cops and they soon discover that they’ve bitten off more than they can chew. Before it’s all said and done they’ll need to actually fight for their lives as they find that knowing who to trust is next to impossible for a dodgy copper.
Cast
In addition to Nicholas Cage and Elijah Wood as the two dubious lawmen, the tightly contained cast also includes singer/songwriter Sky Ferreira (Elvis & Nixon), who continues to build out her filmography credits. The inimitable Jerry Lewis stars in the film too, along with Kevin Weisman (Clerks II) and Steven Williams (22 Jump Street).
Production
Brothers Alex Brewer and Ben Brewer are the co-directors for the film and Ben wrote the screenplay with co-writer, Adam Hirsch. Molly Hassell and Braxton Pope are down as producers.
First impressions
The Trust (2016) is an offbeat film with an unconventional approach to crime thriller action, blurring the line between serious intensity and comedy. The trailer looks strong with both Elijah Wood and Nicholas Cage impressing. With shades of The Nice Guys, another cool looking crime duo film out in 2016, and Training Day it could be one to add to your must-watch list when it arrives in May.
