For anyone that saw the brilliant first series, you’ll be pleased to find out that Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan will be working together again on BBC’s The Trip Series 2. Michael Winterbottom will once again be directing the duo as they venture into Italy this time on their partially improvised trip together.
Talking about his latest film, The Look of Love, in a podcast with Empire Magazine, Coogan confirmed that he would be teaming up with Winterbottom and Brydon again this year to create the second series. Though there is no air date as of yet, it will more than likely be going out on BBC 2 in Autumn, with the first series airing originally in November 2010.
He also confirmed that a research trip to Italy with Brydon and Winterbottom had already taken place, as they begin to work out how to reprise the on screen versions of themselves. This has been added to by Brydon who recently tweeted a picture of himself and Coogan in an airport tunnel with the teaser, “me and Steve taking a little trip together”.
The pair plan to retrace the footsteps of the romantic poets, Shelly, Byron and Keats, taking them on a classical adventure into the literary jet setters of the past. As with the first series, their new adventure will more than likely see them getting off the beaten track, so don’t expect to see famous Italian cities too much. However, little Italian villages and towns will inevitably be a big part of the charm of the production.
Winterbottom has worked pretty extensively with both Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan in the past with films like 24 Hour Party People and A Cock and Bull Story as well as Coogan’s latest film, The Look of Love, a biopic about porn and property magnate Paul Raymond. It’s clearly a winning combination, so we should see more genius comedy dialogue, pathos and ego clashes in the second series of The Trip.
It’s shaping up to be a pretty big year for Coogan following his significant win in the Leveson inquiry. He’ll also be bringing Alan Partridge back, only this time to the big screen with movie, Alpha Papa. It’s set for release on the 7th August 2013, so there’s a lot of Coogan to look forward to as summer starts to wind down.
