The Royal Academy of Arts’ Summer Exhibition 2013 will (incredibly) be their 245th year hosting the event that brings together art from all quarters of the spectrum. As the world’s largest open submission arts exhibition means that it combines contemporary art from the famous to the unknown amateur and everything in between.
Set to open on the 10th June 2013 and running through until the 18th August 2013, this year’s exhibition is being coordinated by the Royal Academicians Norman Ackroyd RA and Eva Jiricna RA. Artists new and old are thrown together on the crammed walls of the Royal Academy of Arts and the good news for visitors is that if something takes your eye and you’ve got the budget (and get in early enough) most pieces are up for sale.
Tickets to the exhibition cost £10 for the full price with concessions available. Under 12s and friends of the RA go free. The cost of admission also includes the Summer Exhibition 2013 list of works, giving you details on every piece of art that has made it past the The Summer Exhibition Committee’s steely gaze.
As ever, artworks at the 245th Summer Exhibition have a wide range of media on show, including painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, architecture and film, so there’s something for everyone and everything for all. The works have been carefully selected by the Committee, which is made up of ten Royal Academicians as well as incorporating direction of the two lead coordinators. More than 1,000 pieces will be on display with many of them taking in the public eye for the first time.
One of the most celebrated artists contributing to the 2013 Summer Exhibition is Greyson Perry, whose series of six tapestries entitled, The Vanity of Small Differences, will be on display. The work tells the story of the rise and demise of Tim Rakewell, inspired by Hogarth’s, A Rake’s Progress, with the tepestries composed of the people, events and objects he encountered on tips through Sunderland, Tunbridge Wells and the Cotswolds.
There will also be a room dedicated solely to portraiture contianing new works by the likes of painter, printer and collagist, Tom Phillips, painter, Frank Auerbach, conceptual artist and painter, Michael Craig-Martin, and the pop art of Alex Katz.
It looks like it’s going to be another memorable exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts.
