The New Mutants trailer 1 arrives

The New Mutants trailer 1 cast

It’s been a long time coming, but the New Mutants trailer 1 has finally arrived giving us a proper look at the finished product and a chunky taste of what to expect following the long delay and word of reshoots for the project. It may not look terrifying, which is a shame because it’s kind of meant to be an X-Men horror spin-off, but it does look like it could be a decent thriller flick with the potential of some jump scares, which are hopefully being saved for the full release.

New Mutants was initially scheduled to come out back in April 2018, but then everything sort of went quiet except for the murmurs about reshooting scenes following Disney’s acquisition of Fox. However, 2019 saw the UK release date getting confirmed for what will be the last mutant film under Fox.

If you missed the teaser a couple of years back and you still haven’t seen trailer 1 you can watch it in full in the video below. The story is a fairly significant departure from the previous X-Men films, whether you’re comparing it to the the original Patrick Stewart era or the James McAvoy First Class of youngsters.

While on paper the plot has similarities to both with a group of young mutants at a facility specially designed for kids with superhuman powers, it doesn’t take long to see that this isn’t Kansas and they’re definitely not in a happy place. The teaser trailer did a good enough job of setting this up, and in all fairness it was a lot freakier than the latest video below, so it’s definitely worth checking it out at www.tuppencemagazine.co.uk/the-new-mutants-release-date-cast-trailer/, or you can visit the official movie pages over on the Fox website https://www.foxmovies.com/movies/the-new-mutants.

For the most part, the cast is made up of lesser known actors, but there are a few familiar faces with Maisie Williams (Ashildr in Doctor Who Series 9 and Arya Stark in Game Of Thrones) playing Rahne Sinclair / Wolfsbane and Charlie Heaton (Jonathan Byers from Stranger Things) as Sam Guthrie / Cannonball. Both feature heavily in the trailer alongside Anya Taylor-Joy (The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance) as Illyana Rasputin / Magik, Blu Hunt (Another Life) as Danielle Moonstar / Mirage and Henry Zaga (Looking For Alaska) as Roberto da Costa / Sunspot.

They’re all being “taken care of” by Doctor Cecilia Reyes, played by Alice Braga (City Of God, I Am Legend, Elysium), but she’s not the main protagonist in the film. That title goes to the sinister forces of Demon Bear, who is one of the main villains, or more accurately dark souls, from the New Mutants comics.

If you’ve never read the comics, essentially it’s a demonic bear that was created using black magic. It feeds off negative human emotions, a bit like Vigo from Ghostbusters 2, has superhuman strength, can teleport, shape-shifter and has the ability to corrupt the soul.

You only get a few fleeting glimpses of what he might look like in trailer 1 with the creature that falls from the room or the thing that bites through the confession box to get to Rahne and the swirling mass in front of Illyana towards the end of the video. He’s pretty shady in general, and everything we’ve seen could easily be just shape-shifting forms, so it’s going to be interesting to see how he’s brought to life on the big screen when the film gets released in April 2020.
