It’s been a long time coming, but full details for The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom UK release date are finally in. You can also find out more about what to expect in terms of the age rating certificate for Breath of the Wild 2, along with details on the story, gameplay and how long it’s likely to take you to beat it.
Story
The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom picks things up in the aftermath of Breath of the Wild. Nintendo hasn’t released a synopsis for the game as of yet, but clearly a new threat has arisen in Hyrule and it’s once again up to Link to stop it.
AdvertisementThe title gives a lot away, and we’re fully expecting to need to head out to find the titular “tears” in order to vanquish the foe. You can see in the picture above taken from the Nintendo Direct presentation that saw the name of the sequel revealed that there will be seven tears in total.
You can also see the divine figure in middle of them and this is more than likely the Goddess Hylia. There are a lot of references in the presentation video linking her to Princess Zelda, who is the mortal form representation of the Goddess, so this is clearly going to be a big part of the story.

Gameplay
AdvertisementYou can check out the presentation for yourself below to get more of a glimpse of the gameplay, but there’s a lot of similarity between The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom and BOTW. However, there are some clear differences to take into account with the most significant being the vertical aspect of the sequel’s gameplay.
Like Skyward Sword, the game will feature a lot of floating islands high up in the sky and you’ll be able to get up to them with a variety of different new mechanisms. Firstly, there’s a rock elevator move that takes link up, but you can also see later in the video a glider, so it’s going to be interest to see how this works.
We’ve also seen in previous videos that you’ll be able to teleport up too, but not all of the islands will be as easily accessible as others. You can see that you might need to climb up their lower walls to gain access, so there are bound to be puzzles to solve to get into a few of the cooler locations.
The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom UK release date
AdvertisementFor a long time, we knew the game as Breath of the Wild 2 and the details on when it’s coming out were as clouded as some of the more remote islands. However, all of that changed with Nintendo’s presentation and name reveal in early September 2022.
We now know that The Legend of Zelda Tears of Kingdom UK release date has been confirmed for the 12th May 2022. The reality is that it was initially slated to come out worldwide in 2022, but that was put back until 2023 a few months before the final release date was announced.
Age rating
The official age rating for The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom won’t be fully confirmed until we get closer to the release. However, PEGI has given it a provisional certificate of 12, which is a pretty good indicator for the UK rating.
If you’re based in the US, the ESRB certificate is still pending, but you can take a lot from the previous game. The age rating for Breath of the Wild was Everyone 10+ in America, but 12 in the UK, so that should be the case again for the sequel unless things get really dark in the latter story elements of the game.
How long will it take to beat The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom?
In some ways, this is very much a “how long’s a piece of string” question, because for BOTW it’s possible to speed run it in less than 30 minutes total. However, you can easily spend hundreds of hours on it if you’re doing every shrine and covering every aspect of exploration.
That’s bound to be the case with The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom (TOTK), although, with the possibility of a different approach to dungeons. There’s definitely going to be a lot more exploration to do with the landscape changing and the addition of the floating islands.
However, if you take all of that away and look at the averages, Breath of the Wild took around 40-60 hours to beat. We’re expecting something similar with TOTK, so it’s going to be a bit of a beast when you compare it to the like of God of War, which was closer to the 20+ hour mark to beat.
