Depending on your choices and your approach to boss fights, you can definitely get into trouble taking on the Sludge Like in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, so the tips in our guide should come in handy. They’ll give you a solid strategy in terms of how to defeat the mud monster up in the highlands of Zora.
The Sludge Like boss fight comes out of nowhere, so it’s easy not to be prepared for it in any way. First and foremost, you haven’t just completed a Temple and it comes just as you think you’re getting somewhere with a cut scene with Sidon and his fiance.
AdvertisementThe moment is ruined by the appearance of the Sludge Like out of nowhere and it isn’t anywhere near as easy as the of Like Likes in the game. There are similarities in terms of its dangling mouth thing weak spot, but it attacks in a very different way, so it’s one that you can get frustrated with.

How to defeat Sludge Like
Essentially, there are two ways to defeat Sludge Like in TotK. The first is to embrace Sidon and his new ability and the second is to go completely rogue and use classic methods to smash him up.
We’ll guide you through both approaches, but as you can see in the video below the latter is a bit more of a banker. It doesn’t rely on waiting for Sidon to charge up his water shield and sword attack swipe and it means you don’t have to get used to the ability on the fly in the stress of the boss fight.
AdvertisementEssentially, you need to use a water element attack to be able to wash away the SLudge Like’s mud shield before you can do any damage. If you’re opting to ignore Sidon’s water power then you can do this by Fusing either one of the King’s Scales or Splash Fruit to your arrows before you fire them at it.
The mud on its body will go and it’ll turn a lighter shade of pale. For the most part you want to completely ignore Sidon when he says we need to get up close and personal with it, but when it’s shield is down that’s what you need to do.
You’re aiming to get close enough to get in a shot on it’s purple mouth sack, ideally with a spear or long stick fused with a powerful item. This will bring the Sludge Like down and give you more opportunities to get in your attacks on its weak spot.
The stronger your weapon, the more damage you’ll do each time, so doing the Fuse trick will definitely make things easier (see the links at the bottom of the page for this). You can also try unleashing a charged attack when it’s down to maximise your impact each time, but it’s a tiny bit more advanced, so if it doesn’t work for you, the standard attacks will get the job done.

When it gets back up, it dives into the muddy ground surrounding the boss fight area and burrows back out with its shield in play again, so you’ll have to repeat the process. However, it’s further into the muddy field, so it’s easy to get bogged down if you take a direct route.
Instead, circle around the edge of the mud and aim for the cliff next to the Sludge Like. This is the key to our guide and working out how to defeat it. You’re attempting to round the enemy and approach it on more favorable terms with space between it and the cliff ledge being free of mud.
When you circle around to it, get yourself set to hit it with another splash or scale arrow and then look for a nice route in to get the sack attack in. You can see this in action against the monster with the video guide below, so try to copy the same route and you should be fine.
Other tips to consider is to check on your armor to see whether or not it’s the best one you have. If not, then equip your best armor set and try again. You can also throw in a meal buff with attack up and speed up being good options to help you defeat the Sludge Like with a little less fuss.

It should take you a few of these cycles to complete the boss fight and you can check the route for the third innings in the video, so you don’t end up getting stuck in the mud. Another thing to consider is that if you shoot one of your splash or scale arrows at its feet, you’ll wash away its body armor and some of the sludge on the ground, giving you a better approach for the sack whack.
Things are a bit trickier if you go for the Sidon tactic, which requires you to press A close to the support character when he’s charged up. You get the benefit of a shield to use and you don’t have to use your resources to defeat the boss, but it’s definitely more fiddly.
When you’ve got the shield active, use Y to attack in the direction of the Sludge Like and this will send out a narrow wave of water to wash away the mud on the ground and its armor. Once you do that, use the same tactics in the rest of the guide and you should be golden.
