Most of The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom players will be pretty curious about what the deal is with the Master Sword location and how to get it. The legendary blade has been a huge part of banishing the darkness since the very first Zelda game back in 1987, so the guide below will take you through where it is and how to get it.
Obviously, if you’re trying to be spoiler free then some of the more details below may not be right for you, so you might want to back out now. However, we’ll try to keep things light in terms of the story to save some of the cooler bits for you to discover on your own.
AdvertisementFrom the look of the trailers the Master Sword is in real jeopardy this time around, but the good news is that it’s back. However, just like Breath of the wild, it’s not just a case of heading down to the beach and picking it up like it was back in The Legend of Zelda Link’s Awakening.
During the Tears of the Kingdom footage, we see that the Master Sword gets overtaken by malice when Walking Dead Ganandorf wakes up. It’s taken from the opening sequences of the game, and the blade is lost as a part of the process.
When the malice takes the sword it also send Zelda flying down a dark cavern and Link lets go and jumps after her. It doesn’t look like he manages to catch her, but he gets saved by the green hand that had been holding down the G man.
The trailers also reveal that the Master Sword was broken when it was stripped from Link and as this does take place right at the beginning of The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, you’re back to square one with a start in The Great Sky Island. You’ll have no sword that seals the darkness and no Princess Zelda, who has the power to banish it, so that sets the scene for the action in TotK.

Is the Master Sword in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom?
AdvertisementDespite things looking pretty bad for the broken Master Sword, you can claim it as part of the fight back against Ganondorf to complete the game. You’ve only got to look at the logo to see that it’s the only feature other than the oroboros circle that is included, so we already knew it was going to be important before the release.
It’s also featured in a lot of the promotional material, including the image above. You can see Link drawing the sword from his back while also sporting the vials we’ve seen from the gameplay on his waist, so the tells were all there.
If that isn’t enough, there’s also the fact that it has been a central factor in the battle against the bastion of malevolence in every game in the series. There’s no way Nintendo was about to do away with the Master Sword in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, so if you’re just starting out, you can find out more about the mission you need to bring it back from the brink in the guide below.

In addition to the Princess telling Link that he must find her at the end of the third trailer, there’s also a lot of images of the Master Sword in tact. These are probably flash backs and show us a bit more about the power in it and it’s connection to Zelda’s power.
AdvertisementWith the logo and the trailer putting a lot of emphasis on the Master Sword, it seem to be pretty important still, so the logical assumption was always that it needs to get fixed before the final boss fight. This isn’t necessarily the basis of your adventure, as the main focus is on finding Zelda and rallying together enough power to be able to stop Ganondorf, but it definitely makes sense to get it along the way, unless you’re trying to land a speed run.
Master Sword location
The short answer is that the Master Sword location is a moving one. It’s embedded in the head of a white and gold dragon that’s circling above Hyrule in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom. As such, it’s hard to pin down its exact location at any one time.
Instead, your best bet is to take to the skies and keep an eye out for the dragon, which you can see in the video below. It’s got golden hair, a long white body and a sword stuck in it’s noodle, so it’s easy to spot when you get close it.

There are other good dragons in TotK, so the other thing to look out for is a rainbow trail coming out of its head at the point that the Master Sword is embedded. Once you’ve spotted it, use the glider or a wing contraption to fly close to it and then land on its head to get within touching distance to the blade.
AdvertisementHowever, as in Breath of the Wild, you can’t just yoink it out with no problems whatsoever. Instead, you need to use your stamina to stay on the dragon as you try to free the sword. In fact, you need two whole wheels of stamina to do it.
On the other hand, if you just want to progress in the game to unlock the mission that gives you the Master Sword, you can find out more about that in the section below. This gives you a bit more time to visit Shrines to get enough stamina chunks to complete the frontal lobe extraction.
How to trigger the quest to recover the Master Sword
To trigger the Recovering the Hero’s Sword quest you need to complete all four of the Regional Phenomena, find a fifth temple and get its power, and visit the Great Deku Tree. It sounds easy when you see it written down like that, but the process is arduous and will take you a fairly long time.
Each of the Phenomena have intro sections where you need to get to the location of the problem and support hero, before heading out to find the temple, solve all of the puzzles and then beat the boss. Depending on how quick you are this can take a few hours each, so it’s not a quick solution.

Can you get the Master Sword early?
We picked up the Master Sword as part of the standard story progression in The Legend of Zelda tears of the Kingdom, but we’re assuming that it’s possible to get it much earlier. The first job will be finding the dragon location, which we’ve talked through above, but more challenging is the stamina.
You could try an elixir to see if that works, but there is another way to get more stamina. In the shelter, in front of the cleaner lady, a way opens up after the first anomaly leading to a secret royal passageway. It also gives you access to a statue that will allow you to swap hearts for stamina chunks at a cost of 20 rupees.
With this you should be able to get the stamina needed early on in TotK and give it a try. As mentioned, this isn’t something that we’ve tried yet, so drop us a comment over on Twitter to let us know if it works.
