The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom how to get the Golden Horse

The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom how to get the Golden Horse

If you’ve heard the rumors, found the quest or seen it online, our guide on how to get the Golden Horse in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom will get you to the location. We’ll cover all of the details, no matter what stage you’re at in TotK, so you can add the Golden Horse to your stables to use throughout the rest of your play-through.

There are a few special horses to collect in tears of the Kingdom, but Zelda’s Golden Horse looks the most impressive. It’s also got some strong stats with four stars for speed and strength with a gentle temperament, 3-star stamina and 2-star pull, with the latter being its only real weakness.

If that isn’t enough, once you get the Golden Horse and bring it back to the stables, you’ll also get the Royal Saddle and Bridle to go with it. They’re not quite as flash as the name implies, but they do look cool and you can equip them to any of your horses once you get them.

How to start the Side Adventure for the Golden Horse

The Side Adventure for the Golden Horse is part of the chasing Zelda quests for the Lucky Clover Gazette. If you haven’t started these, you first need to speak to Penn, the Rito you find at Lookout Landing at the start of The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom and he’ll tell you about the Gazette.

You can then find the Lucky Clover base of operations in Hebra, so clear the Wind Temple to get rid of the blizzard and then you can head to the location to the East of Rito Village. It’s just on the roadside next to Lake Totori and it looks like one of the stables.

When you talk to the boss, you’ll be sent out on assignments, which you can pick up at the rest of the stables throughout Hyrule. The one you’re looking for is called Zelda’s Golden Horse and you start it by talking to Harlow and Penn next to the Snowfield Stable to the North East of Rito Village, which you can see in map image location below.

They’ll tell you that the Golden Horse has run off scared and that there’s a monster blocking the way to the north, so you’ll need some fight skills to close this one out. That will start the Side Adventure and you can read more about what to do next in the section below.

How to defeat the Frost Gleeok blocking the path to the Golden Horse

Once you have the Side Adventure started in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, you can start the journey north from the Snowfield Stable. It won’t take you long to find the Frost Gleeok that stands in your way and you’re meant to defeat it in order to take away the beast in your way.

We’re not sure if you can skip this as a Frost Gleeok was too good an opportunity to miss out on, especially if you haven’t faced one so far in TotK. To beat it you just need to get an arrow shot to each of its heads to bring it down and then use your best spin attacks and weapon choice to bring down its health bar as quickly as possible.

Depending on how strong your weapon is, this might take you a couple of times, and if you don’t have enough to finish it off it’ll go into the second phase of the boss fight. It flies up high and you need to use recall on one of the ice blocks to get up to it. Three arrows and big hits when you land and you should be free to go after the Golden Horse.

If you’re finding it difficult to beat the Frost Gleeok, you can check out our guide to becoming OP fast in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom. Alternatively, you might want to try some of the best recipes in the game to give you a boost. Strength up will mean you do more damage for each hit, so it’s a good place to start.

How to get the Golden Horse once you defeat the Frost Gleeok?

You might think that when you defeat the Frost Gleeok that the Golden Horse will come prancing out of nowhere to nuzzle Link’s neck, but that’s not the case. The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom doesn’t give things to you that easily, but if you keep heading north you should be able to spot it in a clearing between broken stone pillars.

Finding it is only half the battle, though, because the Golden Horse is one of the more challenging mounts to tame in the game. When you crouch and walk behind it, you can only get so close before it starts to canter off and no matter what angle you try it’ll do the same.

It’s even worse if you try to sprint at the last minute, because this will result in it bucking and back-kicking link in the chops before running off again. The good news is that there’s a very simple solution to being able to mount the Golden Horse if you’ve got the right items in your inventory.

Get close to it standing up before it starts to walk away and then fire an ice arrow at it to freeze it. You can then run up beside it and wait. It takes good timing, but if you’re ready to press A to mount it when the ice cracks then you’ll be on and it’s just a case of soothing it like other horses in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom.

If you need a reminder, it’s just a case of pressing L until it calms down, which doesn’t take that long. You’ll need enough stamina to be able to do this, but it’s not that big and nowhere near the stamina you need to pull the Master Sword, so you should be fine.

Once you’ve successfully mounted it, you can take Zelda’s Golden Horse back to the stables and talk to Harlow and Penn. They’ll ask you to look after the horse and it’ll be yours to register to the stables, so don’t forget to do that before you fast travel away.

Sooth it enough to max out it’s friendship and you’ll have one of the best rides in the TotK. You might also want to try the harness on some of your other horses to see what it looks like on them.
