The best armor sets in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom (TotK)

The legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom best armor

With so much to do in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom you can easily miss some of the best armor sets in the game, so the rundown below should give you the outfits that are worth the effort. In TotK, grabbing the best armor will definitely help out with the epic bosses that you take on and we’ll also take you through how to upgrade your armor to ensure you get the most out of them before the final boss fight.

The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild featured some very cool armor, and Tears of the Kingdom takes this to the next level. Admittedly, you didn’t need to wear the best armor to be able to beat Calamity Ganon last time around, and that’s sort of the case in TotK, but things are a little different with a slightly tougher approach to the final boss.

We’ve already seen the huge challenge waiting for Link in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom and you can read more about the final boss fight to get a sense of what’s to come. Obviously, if your perfect parry is spot on and your combat skills are off the charts then you probably won’t need the best armor either way, but sometimes it’s all about looking good while playing.

Whether you want the best armor to give you the edge against the massive threats roaming around Hyrule in TotK, or it’s all about the style, the details below will help. This will include specific armor sets, where to find them, how to reduce the prices in Kakariko Village and walkthroughs for anything a little more difficult to get your hands on.

Early armor sets you don’t want to miss

There are a couple of armor options that you can find relatively early on in the game that will massively help you out throughout The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom. The list below will give you a good start to be able to make your way through the core campaign:

Archaic Warm Greaves

Firstly, you get the Archaic Warm Greaves as part of the progression through the Great Sky Island introduction and these will be useful when you set out for Hebra for the first of the Regional Anomalies quests. This is just for warmth on the approach, but it’s easy to forget that you have them, so worth a mention. They can’t be upgraded, so after this they’re not much use.

Hylian Set

The next one you don’t want to miss is the Hylian Hood, Tunic and Trousers, which you can get from the shop in Lookout Landing. You should have amassed enough gems by this stage to sell for the rupees you need to buy the Hylian Set, but if not you can always head back to the Great Sky Island and go farming in the caves.

This set will be a boost on the Archaic Set that you get during the intro, but it’s when you upgrade it that it starts to have power. The fairies are back once again, so the best armor is often the one you can upgrade the most.

Snowquill Set

The third early piece of you don’t want to miss is the Snowquill Set, which you can buy from the shop in Rito Village. They’re expensive, so you’ll need to do some big farming to get them, but they’ll be worth it for the cold protection during the Tulin of Rito Village quest and Wind Temple.

Zora Armor

Its a similar situation for the Zora Armor when you go to see Sidon. You’ll need to get his fiance an ancient arowana fish to get her to fix it and give it to you. Talk to Dento in the shop to find out where to get them (pst… head to the top of the mountain to Mipha’s statue above where you find Prince Sidon) and you’ll by flying up the waterfalls in no time. It gives you swim speed up and starts out at 8 so it’s not without its merits.

The Champion’s Tunic

You can also pick up the Champion’s Tunic from Hyrule Castle as soon as you can fly there. Head to the thrones and light the braziers in front of it to get it. If you’re not too sure what you’re looking for, you can see the route to take in the walkthrough video below:

Glide Armor Set

Another great piece of armor that you can get early is the Glide Set, which gives you way more move distance when you’re falling from the sky. This means that you travel further in any direction you’re aiming at when you’re in free fall or dive with the armor on, so it can help you cover more ground when you’re low on stamina with the glider.

To get the Glide Shirt, go to the Lindor’s Brow Skyview Tower and blast up into the sky. To you’re left you’ll see an island with circle paths around it. Land there, talk to the construct and complete the challenge to fly through the rings in less than 35-seconds and you’ll get the armor.

Repeat the process for the same kind of spiral sky island formation to the north east of the Mount Lanayru Skyview Tower to get the Glide Mask. The last is then to the south of the Typhlo Ruins Skyview Tower (east of the Eldin Mountains) and this will give you the Glide Tights to complete The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom glide armor set.

Radiant Armor Set

The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom best armor sets Radiant

This is one of the best armor sets that you can get in TotK and it’s available to buy from the Kakariko Village Armor Shop. It’s incredibly expensive to start with, but you can read the section below to get the price down to a more manageable level – although you can also read our guide on how to get rupees fast if you need more dollar bucks.

The reason it’s so good is that it gives you the Bone Weapon Proficiency bonus when it’s upgraded to level 4. You can see how to upgrade armor a little further down the page, but if you take the Boulder Breaker and Fuse it with a Molduga Jaw, you get a very powerful weapon at 70.

However, throw in the Bone Weapon Proficiency bonus and a level 3 attack up with a Mighty Banana Meal and you’re looking at 150 per hit. Use that in a sneakstrike and you’ll do 1200 damage, which is why the Radiant Armor Set is one of the best in the game. You can also read how to take it even further with our guide to getting OP fast.

How to get the Kakariko Village armor sets for less

When you first make it to Kakariko Village, job #1 is probably to check out the armor shop, but sadly everything is 5,000 rupees, so way too expensive. However, if you talk to the assistant, she tells you that the price is only high because of her grandmother’s illness.

You can find her sister outside the house at the top of the village and if you cook a Gloom-curing porridge then you’ll solve the whole problem. The recipe is milk, Hylian rice and Sundelion, which you can find out in the sun on sky islands, and you can use it yourself to cure Gloom any time you get it in the depths.

If you’re not too sure about the location, ingredients or how to get them you can see the armor price fix in the video below, or with our dedicated page on the sick grandma:

Mid-game armor sets

Flamebreaker Set

Unless you take on Goron City after Hebra, this will probably be a mid-game armor pickup. It’s the Flamebreaker Armor and it grants you a Flame Guard once you pick it up, but you’ll need to go to the YunoboCorp headquarters to the north of the city to get it.

It’s 700 rupees, but if you’ve done any mining on the way over from Zora then you might have enough gems to sell to the guys at the desk. If not then try cooking things up and looking at your best items for sale (high volume and price) to make up what you need.

You can then get the rest of the Flamebreaker Set from the shop in Goron City, but it’s 1400 rupees each, so might take you a little while to save up for it.

Soldier’s Armor Set

Once you have done a couple of the Regional Anomalies, you can return to the shelter at Lookout and talk to the cleaner about the gap in the wall that’s opened up. This will give you access to a statue that can switch your heart containers for stamina and vice-versa for a fee, but it also opens up a cave network where you can find the Soldier Set, with each coming with a base stat of 12. It takes some time to find each of the three chests, but it looks very cool and you can follow along with the Royal Hidden Passage walkthrough below if you get lost:

Desert Voe Set

Next up is the Desert Voe Set. You can pick up the chest armor from the Bazar to get a little hot weather protection, but the rest is only hinted at being in a shop in Gerudo Town. Make a flying machine to get to the capital of the region over the sand storm and you can find the hidden shop in town.

Facing the throne room from the North Entrance, take the second left and you can interact with a door, which will tell you that it’s locked. Circle around to the other side and you’ll find a gap to drop down. Smash the blocks in the tunnel until you wind yourself around to be under the shop. You can then use Ascent to get in and get access to the rest of the armor, including the Snow and Desert Boots.

Fierce Deity Armor

The reason that this is one of the best mid game armor pickups in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom is that each one grants you an attack up. With the complete set you get full attack up and they’re all easy to claim. In fact, you could even do this as one of the first things that you do in TotK if you wanted, but it might be a bit challenging.

You start Misko’s Treasure quest by heading past the dogs at the Foothill Stable in Eldin Canyon. Talk to the treasure hunters and then feed the dog apples until it takes you to the right chest. You’ll then get the Ember Trousers for hot weather attack up, and a message in a bottle with clues for the Fierce Deity Armor set.

You can see how to complete all of these in the video above, along with locations for everything. If you go too early you might be a bit under-powered against the Phantom Ganon at Akkala Citadel. You can try landing a bit closer to the chest location to avoid the mini boss fight, or use area of effect arrows like shock or bomb to control the situation a little more.

How to upgrade armor sets

As with Breath of the Wild, you upgrade armor and sets at one of the four Great Fairy Fountains in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom. However, finding them is very different this time around, so you might want to check out the map image above to see where you need to go.

The four Great Fairies are based close to stables throughout Hyrule, but you need to visit the Gazette stables outside Rito Village to start the reporting quest there. Once you do that you need to go to Woodland Stable in Eldin Canyon and talk to Penn next to the stage to start the process of opening up all of the Fountains.

It’s a long process, but you can see it all in full with the video below to follow along with if you get stuck anywhere. It’s well worth it though, because some of the armor sets gets extra buffs when you max out the upgrades for each item.

The best armor sets featured in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom trailers

We don’t know any of the names of the armor that we seen in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom trailers just yet, but we’re going to take you through everything we can take from what we’ve seen so far. There have been a number of different options featured, ranging from standard outfits to more tank-like shock absorbers, so it looks like you’re going to have a lot to choose from.

We’ll cover off everything that we’ve seen from TotK and give them a rating based on style and expected impact in the game. As mentioned above, we’ll also add in more about them, including how to get the best armor when the release date comes around.

Grey Smock

We’re expecting this to be the starting armor/costume for Link after he resets from the arrival of Walking Dead Ganondorf. It looks pretty basic and probably won’t give you much in the way of protection, so the score is pretty low on this one.

However, it’s the armor that features the most in the trailers, so we’re expecting it to be worn a lot. You’ll probably have this for the first few shrines as you learn about the new setup in Hyrule and then you’ll need to find something to replace it soon afterwards.

2/5

Champion’s Tunic

The legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom best armor - Champion's Tunic

The Tunic has been renamed the Champion’s Leather in Tear of the Kingdom, but it’s still the classic The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild outfit but with a few leather strap details. The blue armor is usually paired with the Hylian Trousers to complete the look and gave you the ability to see an enemy’s health the last time around, so you know how many more flurry rushes you need to unleash to defeat them.

The Champion’s Tunic had pretty strong defense when it was upgraded by the lovely lady fairy, so it’s definitely a contender to be one of the best armor options in TotK. If you’re looking to take less damage in the final boss fight, and look good doing it then this could be one to choose.

Flamebreaker Set

The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom best armor

Another returning armor from BotW is the Flamebreaker Set, which gives you flame resistance. It’s the best armor to use when you’re in an area that seems like it might actually be hotter than the sun.

It gives you good defense and looks like a cross between armor and protective clothing for operating a forge. Along with the Snowquill Set below, it reiterates the importance of thinking situational in terms of what the best armor to wear is at an one time.

It’s appearance in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom trailers is a pretty good indicator that a number of the Breath of the Wild armor sets will be returning. These appear to be about environmental protection, so we should also get outfits like the Desert Voe set or the Zora Set too.

3.8/5

Snowquill Set

The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom best armor - Snowquill Set

As with the Flamebreaker Set, the Snowquill armor is the best to use in certain situations. As the name implies, this is all about giving you maximum cold protection and with the Snow Boots you’ll be able to move faster in the snow (see the details for the Desert Voe set above to see where to get the Snow Boots from in TotK).

It also gives you decent defense, but probably isn’t the armor you’ll use to take on the final boss fight unless you fancy rocking the apres ski look while you face down against the ultimate evil of Hyrule. You can find out how to get this set with the section at the top of the page on armor to pick up early in the game.

3.8/5

Centurion armor

The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom best armor - Centurion

This is one of the few new armor sets in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom trailer. However, we can only see it from afar, so it’s hard to know exactly what to expect.

Additionally, with the Fuse ability, we’re expecting to be able to add items to your helmet to improve its capabilities, to this could just be another armor set with a plume fused to the top. From the image above, it looks a bit like a Roman Centurion’s armor, which would be cool, so we’re hoping it’s going to be pretty tanky.

4/5

Dark armor outfit

The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom best armor - Dark outfit

This is what we see Link wearing while riding a horse in the trailers and it looks like the best new addition with the possible Centurion set above being a close second. You can see the helmet has got Moblin horns fused to it, which adds to the point about embellishments, but even without this it would look impressive.

4.5/5

The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild had some incredible armor sets and while the trailer has given us a taste of what’s to come from Tears of the Kingdom, there should be a lot more still to come. Some of these were pretty out there with the likes of the Tingle Set, so we’re looking forward to what we get next.

As mentioned above, we’ll add in more details when the release date comes around, including where to find the best armor in the game and how to get it if there are specific requirements to follow. We’ll also give you details on how to upgrade them to allow you to get the most out of them.

The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom armor wish list

We’d like to have seen a few new armor options added to The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom. The one we wanted the most would give you infinite stamina, but we’d also like weather armor, so that you can change it to your heart’s content.

Moon boots for an extra long and high jump, similar to Super Mario Odyssey, would have also been fun in TotK to allow you to do the long anti-gravity jump from the Water Temple everywhere. Health replenish would be useful for monster part farming, although you can get this by fusing a Light Dragon Scale to a weapon, and armor that boosts a certain attack like flurry rush or aerial damage to give you build options could have added to the fun in the post game.
