Working out how to kill the dangling spiders in The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword HD on the Nintendo Switch was tough, but the crawling spider guarding the chest might just send you up the wall. However, it can be beaten and you can find out exactly how to do it in perfect detail below to be able to advance in Skyview Temple.
The whole section feels like a bit of a nightmare, but the reality is that it’s a training ground for the rest of the game. It forces you to use the whole range of moves that Link has in his arsenal, so that you’re more prepared for the rest of the more challenging battles that are to come in Skyward sword.
AdvertisementIn addition to the details on the crawling spider, you can also find out how to beat the dangling variety too, so that you can breeze through this dungeon without so many heart drops along the way. How to kill the crawling spider
While you might have encountered crawling spiders that you managed to knock down from their dangling perch or the ones behind the web, this one is a bit different. Instead of dangling and reaching for you, it simply drops to the floor and starts to chase you incessantly until you move far enough away from it.
AdvertisementThe spin move doesn’t work on it and none of the projectiles you have at this point in Skyward Sword HD do any damage. However, you do need to use a similar process as with the dangling spider to turn it around and expose it’s chest, which gives you the opportunity to land the fatal blow.

To start with, climb up to the level above using the green vines and use the insect to fly up and break the line holding the crate. When it falls, push the block down to the area with the crawling spider. Push it into the middle and climb on top of it. This will give you total protection from it to give you enough time to get the moves off to kill it.
AdvertisementOnce you’re on the block, target it with ZL and then press up, down, up on the control stick to do the sword move, which results a vertical spin when there isn’t an opportunity to land a fatal blow. This will flip the spider onto it’s back, but keep holding down ZL, so you’re still targeting the spider. If you’re using motion controls, then it’s simply a case of swishing your sword arm up, down, up.
It’s at this point that you really need to move fast. Do the Up, Down, Up sword move again and this time you will do the fatal blow finisher to kill the thing once and for all. This will then unlock the door protecting the chest and let you advance further into Skyview Temple.
If you’re not too sure how to do the Fatal Blow sword finisher attack, you can see the mini tutorial video below to get a glimpse of it in action.

How to kill a dangling spider
You will have faced these a little earlier than the crawling spider, but you may have just got lucky, so if you’re not too sure how to repeat the process, here’s what you need to do. Essentially, do the sword spin move when you get close to them and this will spin them around. You can just use a sideways sword attack either left or right to achieve the same result, but we prefer the spin attack.

From here, you can charge up you Skyword Sword move and do an upward charge shot to knock them to the floor with their underside exposed. Target them and do the Fatal Blow sword finisher to kill them off. If you’re facing a spider behind a web, just use your sword to break the web, before starting with the steps above. You can also try a thrust move on the exposed underside of the spider when they’re still dangling, but this can be fiddly.
