The Fabelmans UK release date

It’s been out in select US theaters since November 11th 2022 and went on to get a general release in America on the 23rd November 2022. It’s one of a number of films that have had split releases this winter with earlier releases in the US than in the UK.

It comes out in the UK a week after Babylon, so it’ll still have some pretty strong competition despite dodging the big winter holiday period. It’ll then have Puss In Boots The Last Wish joining the box office melee a week after the release date, so it’s going to be a challenge to stand out. It’s in a with a shout for some big Academy Award nominations, which are announced on the 24th January, so this could help it in terms of ticket sales in the UK.

With all of that in mind it should then get a DVD and Blu-ray and full digital release around April or May 2023. Success at the box office is currently the biggest contributing factor in terms of the gap between cinema and home entertainment, so we’ll add in more details after the release date.

Age rating

The official UK age rating for The Fabelmens has now confirmed to be 12A. With the trailer and story notes there was already lot to go on in terms of the rating. A certificate of either PG or 12 was always the most likely, especially when you look back on Steven Spielberg’s back catalogue.

In addition to that the content advisory notes for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) premier were bullying, antisemitic language and mature themes. This backed up the age rating range above with perhaps a nudge in the 12 direction, which is what it went on to get.

Luckily, we don’t have that long to go back to find a very close comparison with Kenneth Brannagh having done a similar personal childhood coming of age drama with Belfast last year. It was given a 12 certificate in the UK by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), which added to the consideration for The Fabelmans.

Runtime

With the TIFF premier, we also know The Fabelmans runtime, so unlike the age rating we don’t need to wait for the release date to get closer to get the exact details. It comes in at a chunky 2 hours and 31 minutes, so it’s up there with Spielberg’s longer films, but not the 3 hours epic that Schindler’s List was.
