No matter what difficulty setting you’ve chosen, you’re bound to find it tough to work out how to change weapons effectively during boss fight in The Callisto Protocol. Its an issue that doesn’t present itself as much throughout the rest of the game, but the bosses add in a little extra complexity into the mix.
Admittedly, it’s still a bit labor intensive to change weapons when you’re just fighting standard enemies, but you just don’t need to switch as much, so it’s less of a big deal. This changes as soon as one of the game’s scarce bosses get into the mix and you’ll find yourself running through the ammo.
AdvertisementThey can eat a lot of bullets for breakfast, even if you’ve got explosive rounds in your Hand Cannon, so you find yourself needing to change weapons relatively quickly to stay in the fight. The problem is that the quick option to switch is actually really slow, which means that you get hit before you can land things.
If that isn’t enough, the slower option to bring up the inventory menu doesn’t pause the game or even slow down the action. As a result you can find yourself down and out before you’ve even got to your next weapon of choice.
AdvertisementMelee isn’t an option either as this doesn’t work on the two headed boss, so you’re kind of snookered. It’s a similar story for the final boss fight at the end of Callisto Protocol, so the long and short of it is that you need a reliable method to change weapons when you’re facing off against a big beast boss fight.

How to change weapons
In normal circumstances when you have enough time to do it, you can change weapons in The Callisto Protocol by simply pressing and holding the right directional button. This is the series of four buttons on the left hand side of your PS4/PS5 controller and the button you need is on the right of the plus formation with a little arrow pointing to the right. On Xbox controllers it’s the right direction on the plus shape at the bottom left.
AdvertisementThe problem is that instead of being a simple cycle to the next weapon this will bring up the weapon quick menu and then you’ll have to navigate down or up to what you want to change to. In the heat of a boss fight this can result in you accidentally choosing the same weapon and still having no ammo available to do any damage.
Even worse, you can press everything right and land the dodge that you need, but that process will cancel your weapon change and you’ll still be at square one. The solution isn’t perfect, but the reality is that only a change to the fight mechanics would provide this.
Instead of trying to change weapons all in one go, what you actually need to do is to open up the quick weapon menu to start with using the right directional button. Wait for the enemy to attack again and land the dodge, or dodges (how to dodge), that will give you another phase to play with.
The open menu will remain open and you’ll then have enough time to navigate to the weapon and select it. Wait just enough time for Jabob to do the change and then be ready for yet another dodge situation, which you can see in the video below for the final boss fight.
If you haven’t reloaded then do this in the next phase and then after that you can start back to doing more damage. It sounds convoluted and in all fairness it is, but it does work and it will help you to beat The Callisto Protocol’s bosses a whole lot quicker.
There are also pause moments within boss fights that are better suited to changing weapons, which you can see in the video below against the two-headed boss in the Colony chapter (timestamp at 32:42). After you blast it to its knees with your primary weapon, you melee it on the ground and then it will tear one of its halves off giving you time to change weapons and reload.
