Anytime there’s a new Nintendo side-scrolling platform game there’s a lot of excitement and that’s definitely the case for Super Mario Bros Wonder, but the big N appears to be playing its cards close to its chest when it comes to the bosses in the game. However, there are a couple that have been sort of revealed, and they do a lot to hint at the rest of the big bosses that we’ll have to take on to complete the game.
From what we’ve seen in the trailers and gameplay reveal, it looks like the latest Mario game in the series is going to draw a lot of inspiration from a few big platforming titles from the past. As a result, we’re starting to put together a pretty good picture of what the bosses might be like in Super Mario Wonder, despite the fact that we haven’t seen that many as of yet.
AdvertisementThe two titles that the game seems to draw inspiration from the most are Super Mario 3 on the Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Mario World on the Super NES. Both of these had a slightly similar system in terms of the bosses that featured in the games and we think that’s going to be the case again with Super Mario Wonder.

Super Mario Bros Wonder bosses in order of appearance
AdvertisementWhile the game isn’t out as of yet, we have seen at least two bosses in all of the trailers and gameplay demos for Super Mario Wonder. We’ll cover these initially, but as soon as the release date comes around we’ll update our list to include the rest of the bosses that feature in the game.
#1. Bowser Jr.
It’s hard to say exactly what this iteration of Bowser Jr. is, but it definitely looks like it’s been altered by either it’s presence in the Flower Kingdom, or the Wonder Seeds in some way. He seems to grow and shrink as you battle it with the smaller form being much easier to deal with than the big stomping form that will make jumping a whole lot more difficult.
AdvertisementBowser Jr. also appears to have a strange purple glow in Super Mario Wonder, which looks like it’s linked to the Wonder Seeds to make the Flower Kingdom so much more different to the Mushroom Kingdom. We’re expecting this to be a part of a theme in the game with plenty of other bosses having similar weird and wonderful iterations, abilities and move sets to figure out.
The fact that he’s going to be one of the bosses is a good indication that we’ll get something similar to Super Mario Bros. 3 where we had to take on Bowser’s underlings including Lenny and Mort. It was a similar situation in Super Mario World and it’s been a while since they’ve been seen in a new game, so it’s got real potential.
However, it’s going to be interesting to see what extra bosses they throw into the mix to support them. We’re expecting the the Kooperlings to be the guardians or gatekeepers of the final stage boss fight, but there are bound to be a few smaller bosses for each of the worlds that you have to take on.
These are normally the most interesting bosses so it’s going to be fun seeing them in action in Super Mario Wonder. If you look back on World on the Super NES it’s enemies like the rotating triceratops boss, and it would be pretty impressive to see them returning in some way. It’s more likely that we’ll get new bosses rather than recreations of older enemies, but you never know with Nintendo.
Super Mario Wonder is definitely shaping up to be a combination of nostalgia and brand new mechanics. And that definitely seems like it’s going to be the case with the game’s bosses. We already know there are seven worlds in the game, so that means at least six main bosses before we take on the final boss fight in the central island.
If you do the maths, that’s at least seven bosses in total, but with the potential of the mini ones it could well be as many as 10 to 14. As mentioned above, we will update you with more details once the game is out and we’ve had a chance fight our way through to the final fight.
The final boss fight
AdvertisementIn addition to the main bosses for each of the worlds and the mini bosses, there will also be the inevitable final boss fight, and – as we’ve covered previously – it’s shaping up to be another duke-out with Bowser. But if you’ve seen the gameplay demo then you’ll know that he’s a little bit different in Super Mario Wonder thanks to the strange abilities that are in play in the Flower Kingdom.
Somehow Bowser has fused with the Flower Castle to become one mean looking anthropomorphic building that can fly around and rain down mayhem from above. This has got shades of Clown Car Bowser from Super Mario World where he made off with the Princess in his flying clown face mobile, so it definitely looks like we’ll be taking on the king of the Koopas in this form in Super Mario Wonder.
Hopefully, we’ll then get to do something different this time around with a multi-phase final boss fight. This would start out with Bowser in castle form, but turn into a tussle with him when we use some kind of magical item to turn him back into his normal form.
Essentially, we’re hoping that Nintendo throws the kitchen sink at Super Mario Wonder with plenty of bosses, lots of interesting mechanics and a multi-phase final boss fight that’s worthy of a brand new 2D side scrolling platform game from Nintendo. There’s only a day or so to go until the release date, so we’re getting close to being able to play the game, so it’s only a matter of time before we get update our list of Super Mario Bros Wonder bosses in order of appearance.
We’ll add these in as soon as we get our hands on the game. For now, you can check out our computer games section to what other games are coming out in the coming months. You can also visit the Nintendo website at www.nintendo.com for more detail on SMW.
