It looks like Nintendo and Illumination is going to land the biggest animated film of the year, so here’s the latest on the Super Mario Bros Movie UK DVD, Blu-ray and digital release date. You can also read more about the potential special features and extras that might be coming down the line when home media comes out.
The last time Mario had a movie out it was 1993 and sadly things didn’t go so well for him with one of the worst box office results in the history of computer games adaptations. Things are a little different now and with Illumination in the mix and an animated style things fit better with the characters.
AdvertisementMuch like the 1993 film, the Super Mario Bros Movie is an origin story that starts out with the brothers (Chris Pratt and Charlie Day) trying to build their plumbing business in Brooklyn and the wider Tri-State area. Things go sideways when their efforts lead them to a warp pipe that sends them to the Mushroom Kingdom.

If you’ve played any of the games then you’ll know that it never takes too long before Bowser (Jack Black) wades into the action and suddenly you’ve got an adventure on your hands. In a bid to get his brother back, Mario will need to team up with Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) to save the day.
The trailers have all been well received and it looks like it’s off to a good start at the box office, so the Super Mario Bros Movie DVD, Blu-ray and digital release date is going to be one of the biggest of the year. Reviews have been pretty positive too and you can read our no spoilers take on the film with the link above if you’re still mulling over whether or not to see it on the big screen.

UK DVD, Blu-ray and digital release date latest
AdvertisementWith the release date just in for theatres on April 5th, 2023, the Super Mario Bros Movie should go on to come out in later summer. Early access digital will probably be earlier, but with Avatar 2 shaking things up with a very long gap between cinema and home media, it’s hard to say for sure.
The Way of Water also skipped on early access rental, focusing on digital sales when it came out in the UK on April 3rd. All of this could mean that the Mario movie has a long cinema run too, depending on how well it does at the box office, which could push Home Premier back to the summer too.

If you take Avatar 2 out of the equation, and you just look at other animated films, there’s normally a shorter gap, so we could see it arriving on early access as early as the end of May. This would tie in with the summer mid-term holidays, so makes a lot of sense to come out in both the UK and North America alike.
The DVD, Blu-ray and standard price digital release date for the UK should then follow a couple of months later, so you’re probably looking at either August or September. There aren’t that many animated movies out over the summer holidays, so it could still do well in cinemas.
AdvertisementThe Super Mario Bros Movie will definitely have it’s biggest success on the big screen over the Easter holidays, but with very few new movies out in April, it could be good all month. The only other big film coming out is Joaquin Phoenix’s Beau Is Afraid, which has a very different audience, so it probably won’t be until May when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, The Little Mermaid remake and Fast X arrive for it to lose out to bigger films.
After that, things get very busy in June, but its biggest competition will come from the new Disney Pixar animation, Elemental. It’s an original story, which Disney and Pixar has struggled with recently, so it’s going to be interesting to see if it comes anywhere near the success of the Mario movie.
North America release date latest
As usual, the Super Mario Bros Movie DVD, Blu-ray, 4K and digital release date in North America will be a little ahead of the UK. Starting out with early access digital, it will might look to land in time for the summer mid-term holidays in the US, which are at the end of May.

We’re then expecting it to come to the rest of home media around July to August, but either way it will be a few weeks earlier than the UK release. Things might be a little more complex for digital rental, with the Avatar 2 situation, but you can read more with the link above.

Super Mario Bros Movie special features and extras
We should get all of the details for the Super Mario Bros Movie special features and extras when the release date for the early access digital version is confirmed. There’s definitely a lot of scope for them to go big with it, though, with everything from the history of Super Mario to the cast and animation process to cover.

There’s usually a special feature on bringing the world to life and the characters, so we’re expecting them here, along with the standard bloopers, gag reel and deleted scenes. This should be accompanied by directorial commentary from Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.
As this is an Illumination animated feature, there’s also scope for a short or two with everything else in its back catalogue. A Mario and Minions crossover would be pretty funny, but there’s also Sing and The Secret Life of Pets, so there’s plenty of scope to play around with something fun.
