Strays UK release date, age rating latest and more

Strays UK release date and age rating

Will Ferrell (The Lego Movie, Elf) will be breaking out of the dog house with the Strays UK release date planned for the end of Spring 2023. In addition to when the film will be coming out, we’ll also take you through the latest details on the age rating, along with everything you need to know about the story, cast and runtime for the film.

The live-action and CGI comedy will see Ferrell starring as the lead character, Reggie, a Border Terrier that has the canine equivalent of a coming of age journey of discovery. You can find out more about the story in the details below, but this is going to be a film that has a lot more bit than it sounds like it might.

When you looks at the story synopsis, it sounds like it could easily be made for kids, rather than adults, but that’s far from the case. Instead, it’s more like Ted than the recent live action remake of Clifford The Big Red Dog, so that’s going to have an impact on the age rating (details below).

We’ll keep things updated here as more details are confirmed. Don’t forget to follow us on Twitter to see more news and updates on upcoming films, and you can find the official Twitter page at http://twitter.com/straysmovie.

Story

The story for strays picks up with Reggie and his life with Doug, who’s pet care skills are just a little better than Lennie’s from Of Mice and Men. However, Reggie still loves Doug, despite their game of drive Reggie to the middle of nowhere and hope he doesn’t find his way back.

Reggie is normally pretty good at the game, but when he gets left stranded with a group of other stays, the dark reality of his existence becomes apparent to him. With his new crew, they all set off back to see Doug to give him a piece of their mind. And by that, the piece of their mind that they’re planning to give him involves a ragged tearing motion in the trouser department.

Cast

In addition to Will Ferrell as Reggie, the Strays cast also includes Will Forte (The Lego Movie 2) as Doug and Jammie Foxx (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) as Reggie’s new best friend, a Boston Terrier called Bug. It also stars Isla Fisher (The Great Gatsby) as Australian Shephers Maggie and Randall Park (Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom) as Great Dane, Hunter.

The cast also includes Josh Gad (Beauty and the Beast), Harvey Guillén (Puss in Boots: The Last Wish), Rob Riggle (The Hangover), Brett Gelman (Stranger Things), Jamie Demetriou (Barbie), and Sofia Vergara (Modern Family).

Release date – UK and North America

Strays has been confirmed for a release date of June 9th, 2023 in North America, which expecting to be the same in the UK. However, details haven’t been confirmed as of yet and there are no listings in cinemas over here as of yet, so we’ll keep you updated.

It’s possible that the production is holding fire on announcing things until we get closer to the US release date, but we’ll be surprised if it doesn’t arrive in the UK in some capacity. One consideration is the age rating and with it being a boldly R rated film in the US they might be waiting on pre-sales in North America before deciding on other territories.

You can read more about age rating below, but it’s akin to Ted and its sequel and both of these came out in the UK, so that should be the case with Strays too. Having an R rating shouldn’t impact things too much in terms of the launch, but with so much upheaval in the movie industry over the last few years it’s hard to call how things are going to lie, fetch or roll over.

Coming out on the big screen in the US in June means that it will be up against Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse, which arrives a week earlier, and Transformers Rise of the Beasts on the same weekend. There’s then The Flash and Elemental a week later, so it’s going to be a busy time to compete at the box office.

If Strays does come out in the UK in June then we’re probably looking at October before we get the full DVD, Blu-ray and digital release. We’re not expecting it to have a huge impact at the box office, so it will probably be a normal run in cinemas for this type of film with early access digital following a month or so later.

Age rating

We already know that the Strays age rating in North America is in as an R certificate, we won’t get anything in the UK until we get closer to an official release date. Although, there’s a lot that we can take from the trailer, related films and the age classification in the US.

For a start, there the R rating, which can either be a 15 certificate or an 18 in Britain. However, 18s are usually reserved for horror films or action thrillers with more injury details.

Potty-mouthed dogs are pretty closely related to trash talking bears when it comes to age ratings, so a 15 certificate is the most likely. If you look at the trailer, it’s got a lot in common with films like Ted and Your Highness and both of these came out with 15 ratings in the UK.

Runtime

The runtime for Strays has already been announced with a number of age rating reviews already in the bag. It’s set to be 1 hour and 33 minutes long, which is a little shorter than Ted, which was 1 hour and 42 minutes, but it looks like there might be less to the story, if that’s even possible.

Trailer

The only trailer we could find for Strays had more effing and jeffing than a Stoke City football game, so you can check it out over on YouTube. It’s pretty clear that the film has set out to be an R rated comedy that pulls no punches.

If you liked Ted or Your Highness or Pineapple Express then this one might be for you. However, if you prefer a dainty cup of tea with your Chekov on a Friday night then you might want to give it a miss.
