ComicCon has brought a wealth of new film, TV and comic book announcements, but the most exciting arrival for us was the Star Trek Picard teaser trailer, which also gave us a first listen of the new theme tune. It also provided a bit more info about the release date for season 1, which has now been confirmed for 2020 on Amazon Prime in the UK and CBS All Access In the US.
The series will see Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Jean Luc Picard 20-years after the events of Star Trek Nemesis. You can see in the teaser trailer below that he’s still deeply affected by the loss of Data at the end of the film, which also confirms that Brent Spinner will be back too.
He’s shown in a state of disrepair at the beginning of the trailer with the theme tune playing over the somber scene, but then you can see him back together later on. It comes across as a dream scene, though, so either it’s B-4, an earlier model of Data, or maybe a hologram or something else out of the ordinary.
Picard’s melancholy reflection is disturbed by the arrival of a girl who he believes to be of special importance, sparking his return to the Captain’s chair once again. The teaser closes on the reveal of both Seven of Nine, a Borg ship and a dark reference to the girl’s destructive capabilities, which builds up a lot of anticipation for the release date next year.
Star Trek Picard theme tune
You can listen to the music in the teaser trailer below to get a feel for what to expect from the Star Trek Picard theme tune. It’s not as instantly iconic as the original song, or that of Generations, which is where the Captain had his first shift at the helm of the Starship Enterprise, but its early and it isn’t played out with the title theme intro running with it.
The Star Trek Discovery song wasn’t instantly recognisable, but it didn’t take too long to become ingrained after a couple of episodes from Season 1. By the second series it had taken its place with the other songs from the long-running sci-fi classic.
The new song is a classical electro hybrid, which is getting a bit of a resurgence at the moment with the likes of BBC’s His Dark Materials going down a similar route. It mixes a piano harmony with synth interjections, building in drama as the trailer progresses to the cliffhanger reveals.
Star Trek Picard release date
An exact release date hasn’t been confirmed as of yet for Star Trek Picard for either Amazon Prime In the UK or CBS All Access in the US. However, there are some key release periods that are more likely than others. We know that it will be coming out in 2020 and the four big release windows are Easter, July ahead of the summer holidays, early-mid Autumn as everyone starts to hunker down for cold night telly and winter holidays.
The teaser trailer would imply that production had wrapped, so the show is probably good to go, or very close to being completed, so we expect the release date to be sooner rather than later. With that in mind, spring 2020 is a serious contender, but we’ll update things here with more details as they become available.
