With the release of their new EP, Something Terrible, on the 3rd September 2012, St. Spirit has put their latest single, Build A Life, up for free download. While the label-confessed comparisons with Biffy Clyro are unfortunate, there’s more intelligence here and less puzzling pretension.
A better yard stick would be a hybrid between early Radiohead, Willy Mason and Beck. There’s a lot of big sounds intermixed with subtler points, garage grunge and a poetic streak that gives Build A Life its own character.
Feedback and fuzz kick the song off before the softer riffs and a simple acoustic rhythm take on the verse. It builds up to souring harmonies before jumping into the big Build A Life chorus and then stepping back sharply for the verse once again.

The video for the song, made by Max McCabe, is an amazing animated adventure of old men and their battles with the sea. It’s stunningly surreal with distinct animation combined with real waves and creatures from the deep.
As well as releasing the Build A Life free download, the South Londoners are also playing Bestival on the weekend of the 8th September.
