Marvel and Sony Pictures have just released the third trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming and while it’s probably the strongest preview to-date, it looks like it’s been crafted to limit the focus on Michael Keaton (Birdman). He plays the main antagonist in the film taking on the role of Vulture, which has a few similarities to his previous role in Birdman, but it’s a part that the film’s critical success hinges on.
The fact that he only gets a few fleeting shots may well be an indication that the studios have picked up on the fan concern for that element of the story. For us, superhero movies are are won and lost on the strength of the bad guys and if the Vulture isn’t impressive enough a character then it could bring down reviews for the film when the release date rolls around in July.
Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer 3:
From what we’ve seen from previous trailers and details on the role, it sounds like the Vulture a.k.a. Adrian Toomes, is a regular guy that somehow manages to become a super villain, which really doesn’t sit well for us with no obvious inherent superpowers of his own. His abilities come from a very sophisticated super-suit, which looks like it could rival Tony Stark’s creations. The problem with this is that there isn’t enough of an indication of his technical skills, assets and wealth to be able to create such impressive kit.
If Spider-Man: Homecoming can somehow tie this aspect of the plot up with the rest of the film and make it credible then it could well be an impressive release. However, if it just tries to brush over it as it appears to have done in the three trailers so far then it really could be the ruin of the film, which is otherwise an exciting prospect.
On a positive note, the trailer does draw out some of the comedy elements of the latest Marvel flick with good hints of dialogue between Peter Parker and his school buddy Ned, played by Jacob Batalon. Tom Holland (The Lost City Of Z) also throws out a fair few funny quips as he’s bringing down the crooks in NYC, which starts off a little of the character development which the film will need to cover to build the potential of an ongoing series.
There are also some good action scenes in the trailer, which should translate well on the big screen as they’re all strung together. The ferry scene has been a constant feature of all of the trailers and it’s going to be one of the big sections for the film by the look of things. It’s hard to criticise the look of the Vulture’s tech and the weapons that are on show in the trailer, but it will all come down to the validity of the back story behind the character.
Writer, John Francis-Daley described the film in his post about Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer 3 as a coming-of-age film, so it’s going to be interesting to see how it all comes together. Let us know what you think in the comments below.
