It looks like Spider-Man 2 will introduce Mysterio into the mix for the large roster of bosses and villains that will be gracing the game when it launches on the PS5 in October. You might be thinking that you’ve scoured the video for all of the big names, but not seen anything to imply that Mysterio will be in the game, but there’s more to this story than meets the eye.
We’ve already featured most of the big names that Spider-Man and Miles Morales will have to face in the third game in the series in our post on the bosses that have been confirmed so far. But with Sony’s recent PlayStation State of Play video there’s a big clue that there will be at least one more to add to the list, but we’ll cover all of the details in full below.
AdvertisementSpider-Man 2 launches on the PlayStation 5 on October 20th 2023 and it’ll have some pretty big competition from Super Mario Wonder, which is out on the same day. It seems like too much of a coincidence to be a coincidence, but it’s hard to say whether it was Nintendo pitching up against Sony or vice versa. It’s clear that there’s still a lot of console war efforts going on in the background with all of the big three positioning and repositioning as we go into 2024.
Spider-Man 2 will be a big part of PlayStation’s plan for holiday 2023, which is why Sony appears to be throwing the kitchen sink at it. That includes the big name villains, which are sure to be some of the most epic boss fights that we’ll get this year, and if that does go on to include Mysterio then it’s definitely going to be one huge game.

If you’re wondering where the confirmation for Mysterio takes place in any of the Spider-Man 2 videos the one that you need to look at is in the expanded Marvel’s New York feature, which was included in the September Sony PlayStation State of Play. In the video you can hear creative director Bryan Interhar talk about various aspects of the Spider-Man 2 universe, covering the new location additions to the game, Brooklyn and Queens.
As part of the discussion, he also talks about the new map hud system that you get, which includes new markers and activity events that you can find throughout the game world. If you watch carefully and you know a thing or two about Spider-Man characters then you might start to get a little bit suspicious when you see the eye symbol early on in the video which you can see in the image above.
AdvertisementYou can also watch the entire video for yourself to see it in action, but the symbol can only be attributed to one character and that’s Mysterio, who we last saw in Spider-Man Far from Home, played by Jake Gyllenhaal. Obviously, the cinematic universe and the game world are not linked in any kind of big way, but it’s going to be interesting to see what they do with the character in the game.
We’re expecting it to be something similar to Taskmaster from the very first Spider-Man PlayStation 4 game, where he had a series of side quests before he goes on to become one of the boss fights. It was a similar story with Simon Krieger/Roxxon in Spider-Man Mile Morales, so it looks like Mysterio will fill this role in Spider-Man 2.

If that’s the case then we can expect to have a series of quests with Mysterio and if we pass those we might come face to face with the classic villain as one of the big bosses in the game. For anyone that doesn’t know a great deal about Mysterio, his real name is Quentin Beck and while he doesn’t have any superpowers as such, he’s very resourceful, so could be a real test for Spider-Man and Miles Morales.
His addition to the game is yet another founding member of the Sinister Six following on from Electro, Vulture and Dr. Octopus in the first game on the PS4. He’ll join Kraven the Hunter who’s another founding member of the Sinister Six from the original Marvel comics, so that means we will have had five of the six in total by the end of Spider-Man 2.
He probably won’t be integral to the main story, but it’s definitely going to be a lot of fun to make it through the side quests to be able to take him on. If you’ve seen Spider-Man Far from Home, then you’ll know that the character will be using a lot of special effects tricks to come after you, so expect the same kind of setup for the side quests.
Spider-Man 2 Mysterio challenges and boss guide
As soon as Spider-Man 2 launches on the PlayStation 5 later this year we’ll update things here with more details on the character and how he’s featured in the game. This will include details on how to complete any of the missions or challenges that he sets to help you through the story arc and come face to face with Mysterio if he is one of the bosses.
AdvertisementWe’ll also include details on how to defeat Mysterio with tips on how to make it through each of the phases and what moves work well against him. We’re also expecting certain spider gadgets to be more effective than others, so we’ll cover that in more detail too, which should help you defeat Mysterio if you’re having any difficulties.
We’re hoping that the teaser for Mysterio isn’t the only secret boss included in Spider-Man 2. Miles Morales was definitely light on bosses, but hopefully that’s not the case this time around and we’ll get a few more to add into the mix before we beat the game.
One of the biggest that we’re hoping for is Sandman, who was initially teased in the very first game as one of the backpack mentions. In it, Peter Parker talks about a vial container and wonders whether or not he’ll let out Sandman if he ever opens it. However, we wouldn’t want Insomniac Games to do this lightly, because there’s so much potential for the character to have a large story arc.
Although, in all fairness, it’s a similar case for Mysterio, so fingers crossed they do the character justice and don’t just throw in a few story quests on the side. With venom, Kraven the Hunter , Lizard and The Green Goblin all in the mix, it doesn’t necessarily leave a great deal of room for the side villains, but hopefully the power of the PlayStation 5 will give it the juice and freedom to do them all well.
