Images, claims and videos are running wild online about the possible development of a Sony PSP phone, but it’s looking more and more like the rumours might be true. With the biggest competition to handheld gaming coming from the likes of the iPhone rather than Nintendo, it sort of makes sense for Sony Ericsson to bring out a supped up Android 3.0 PSP phone to fight back before Microsoft beats them to the punch.
While the graphics on a possible PSP Phone may not be a big step up from the current PSP, they will be a huge improvement on the experience delivered by iPhone gaming, which, though fun, can be clunky and full of glitches at times. Especially when delivering 3D gaming like Iron Man 2 or GT Racing.
However, surely the big challenge will be how well it delivers the other elements of the device, like the phone functionality, a camera, radio, internet device, apps, etc. etc. The big question will be, will it truly be a contender to the iPhone, or will it just be a PSP with minified tech and a phone bolted on for good measure.
However, maybe the Sony PSP Phone will not need to be all things to all people. Maybe all it needs to do is bring serious gaming to a phone device that reduces the need to carry around more than one device, which is a big part of mobile technology.
There’s no confirmation from Sony Ericsson with regards to the development of the rumoured PSP phone, however, if they do it and do it right, it could be a big thorn in the side of Apple’s mobile domination.
