The 2021 Game Awards saw the arrival of the first trailer. Here’s everything you need to know about the Sonic 2 UK release date, along with the latest on the age rating. We’ll also take you through the story, cast of characters and our estimated runtime in a blue blur. That’ll leave you free to get back to picking up gold rings and contemplating why Knuckles is a bad guy this time.
The story follows on from the first film with Sonic trying to use his powers for good and getting into trouble for it. When Dr. Robotnik returns to Earth in a giant egg, he gets to unleash his might once again. The problem is that the Doctor hasn’t just been twiddling his mustache while he’s been away. He’s got a few new tricks up his sleeve to make things a whole lot more challenging.
Advertisementthe villain has managed to recruit Knuckles to his cause somehow, as well as finding the Power Emerald. The Echidna has got the kind of strength that can stop Sonic, so he makes things very interesting. It follows a similar story to Knuckles’ introduction to the game in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Dr. Robotnik managed to trick him into fighting Sonic in the side scrolling platform adventure. The good news for the blue dude is that Tails has been sent to find him too. He’s obviously going to help him take on Robotnik, and possibly win over Knuckles along the way.
Cast
The Sonic 2 film cast sees Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) back in the lead role, along with James Marsden (X-Men) as Tom. Tikka Sumpter returns as Maddie and Jim Carrie Dr. Robotnik once again. New additions to the cast include Colleen O’Shaughnessey as the voice of Tails, and Idris Elba as Knuckles. Shemar Moore will also feature in an as-yet undisclosed role in the film.

Sonic 2 movie UK release date
The arrival of the trailer has earmarked the Sonic 2 movie UK release date to be the 1st April 2022. This is a week earlier than the general release for North America, so we’ll get to see it first. There have been a few big films that have come out earlier in the UK with Spider-Man No Way Home being one of the biggest.
With Morbius out a couple of days earlier it’ll have some fairly hefty competition though. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is out in the UK a week later too. That doesn’t give the Sonic sequel much free space at the box office, so it’ll be an interesting Easter hols.
AdvertisementThe only other family film out, though, is Rabbit Academy, which has a much younger audience. With the success of the previous film, Sonic 2 should be another hit with fans of the game. Especially with the addition of Tales and Knuckles and Idris Elba joining the cast.

Age rating and parents guide
The official Sonic The Hedgehog 2 movie age rating for the UK has now been confirmed by British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). It has been given a PG certificate with the release date coming up. This is the same as the first film, so pretty much as expected.
It also follows other recent comparable animated film releases like The Addams Family 2, which was given a PG in the UK. There are a lot of ballistic missiles in the trailer and Sonic takes one to the spiky face at one point. However, that’s pretty mild in comparison to Pugley’s antics, so clearly didn’t impact the age rating.
In terms of the parents guide notes, there is some mild animated computer game violence where Sonic is pretty much impervious to everything, except for a thumping blow from Knuckles. This gives it a little threat, but it’s minimised by him being so invulnerable. There was also a little rude humour in the first film, so that could be the case again with the sequel, although, there isn’t any in the trailer.
We’ll update you with more details on the age rating for the film as they get confirmed. You can also check out our movie news section to keep tabs on the latest upcoming movies, or visit the Paramount Pictures website at www.paramount.com/.
