With its cinema run done and dusted, here’s the latest we have on the Shazam Fury of the Gods rent online release date. If you’ve seen the trailers then you’ll know that there are some impressive moments to catch on the big screen, but these should be pretty strong on home rental too.
As with a lot of other films this year, the timings for the Shazam 2 online launch could have gone a number of ways, but early access was pretty early, coming out way ahead of regular rental. With Avatar 2 seemingly skipping on the earlier format, all bets are off for the rest of the movie industry, but it looks like it’s back to the usual run of things for this one.
AdvertisementThe second movie is titled Shazam Fury of Gods, so it doesn’t take an apple-loving genius to work out the general gist of the plot. Essentially, the daughters of Atlas are annoyed because their power has been given to kids, so they set about a fire and brimstone attack of retribution.
It’s directed by David F. Sandberg, who was also at the helm for the first Shazam film, so there’s a good amount of continuity between the two. You can see this in both trailer 1, which came out in July 2022, and the second trailer, which arrived in January 2023.

AdvertisementYour first chance to see Shazam Fury of the Gods is on early access and it’s available to rent and buy already in North America. It will then follow in the UK around 45-60 days after the big screen release date. However, with the point above about Avatar: The Way of Water, the rental could still be a discretionary thing going forward.
If you take the norm and apply it to the return of Billy Blatson to cinemas on March 17th, 2023, then that would give you a window during May for early access in the UK. It’s already available to pre-order it to buy on early access digital, so it could well be even earlier.
The big caveat, though, is that Shazam! is a DC Studios production for Warner Bros. Pictures, so it has no link to Disney, unlike Avatar 2. The example there for the longer wait for rental, along with a similar release pattern for Black Panther Wakanda Forever, might not apply.
Add in the fact that it hasn’t had a strong result at the box office and reviews have been mixed and you’ve got a good reason for the early access coming so quickly in the US. This should be replicated in the UK as soon as Easter cinema viewings cool down and we should get the rental option to go with the purchase pre-order.
AdvertisementAs it looks like it’s going to stick to the usual run of things, Amazon Prime, iTunes and the Play Store will be your main early access providers to rent Fury of the Gods. The DVD, Blu-ray and standard digital purchase release will follow later in the year.
Shazam Fury of the Gods rent online release date
With everything from a dragon fight to Helen Mirren smashing Zachary Levy all over the screen, cinema is definitely one to consider (check out our no spoilers review in the links below). But if you’re looking for when you can see the standard digital rental Summer is your target. There’s obviously nothing official from Shazam Fury of the Gods, but just looking at the averages over the last year or so, July is probably the earliest possible date to rent online at standard prices.
With the cinema release on the 17th March 2023, we should get the film out with a Blu-ray, digital, and DVD release in the UK around July. If you’re based in North America, this has already been confirmed for May 23rd, 2023, so it’s an outside chance we might see it in June over here in Britain.
Once that’s done, the standard rent online option will trail after this and the date range can be anything from as early as a week to over a month later than the DVD, Blu-ray and standard price digital purchase. This points to late July as a fairly decent estimate for it to be there on Amazon Prime Video, Google Play and iTunes.
AdvertisementAs with the early access release, there are plenty of things that can impact things. As before, there are the precedents that have been set by Avatar 2 and Black Panther 2, so if Warner Bros. Pictures wants to roll a similar dice then Fury of the Gods could be a good starting point.
The fact that early access rental looks like it might never come for The Way of Water leads to the potential for other films to mix things up a bit. If that’s the case then it might be August before we see it coming anywhere near the Blockbuster’s successors.
A lot of this will depend on how well Shazam 2 does with box office sales and the fact that it’s lower than we’d expected is a good sign for a quicker home media release. It came out at a very busy time, with The Super Mario Movie, 65 and Dungeons & Dragons Honor Among Thieves all in the mix, which will have had an impact. The fact that there’s already early access available in North America is also a good indicator that it’ll be the earlier estimates.

Where can I watch the film online?
AdvertisementLong after it becomes available to rent online, there’s a good chance Shazam Fury of the Gods will eventually become available to stream online. However, with the first film nowhere to be seen on any of the main platforms in the UK and North America there’s little to go on at the moment.
This should give the DVD, Blu-ray and digital download release a lot of time without needing to compete. That being said, there is at least one other DC Extended Universe film that is currently available to stream, which could hint at possible destinations for the second film.
For example, Wonder Woman 1984 is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video in the UK, so it’s going to be a contender for Shazam 2. The other thing to take into account is that the first film is available on Netflix in Germany, so this at least hints at a relationship with Warner Bros. Pictures.
Is it possible to watch Shazam 2 on Hulu?
If you’re a Hulu subscriber in North America, then you might be wondering about the chances of Shazam 2 coming to the service. The bad news is that it’s highly unlikely with the company being part owned by the Walt Disney Company and NBCUniversal.
As a DCEU film it’s unlikely that it will ever be paired with the Marvel ownership of Disney. As a result, if you’re looking to catch Fury of the Gods online other then the digital purchase or rent online release on iTunes, Amazon Prime Video and the Google Play store is your main option this year.
