The DC universe has had a lot of ups and downs in recent years, but with the Shazam 2 Fury of the Gods UK release date it looked like it might have a film that would make Zeus climb down from Mount Olympus. Out early in 2023 (see details below), here’s everything you need to know including the story, cast, age rating certificate, runtime and our take on the trailer.
But before you suit up and head to your nearest multiplex (Zeus, we’re talking to you), let’s take a closer look at what to expect from the movie. The story and cast are packed with familiar faces and newcomers alike, bringing a fresh perspective to the tale of Billy Batson and his alter-ego Shazam. Directed by David F. Sandberg once again, we gave the film a good review, but the box office results have been a little lukewarm. With so many changes over at DC it’s going to be interesting to see whether it’s enough to stay on the roster.
Story
AdvertisementThe plot of Shazam 2 Fury of the Gods centers around the arrival of the daughters of Atlas who appear to be annoyed that the power of the gods has been stolen by children. The story picks up a few years after the events of the previous film, Shazam!, in which Billy Batson discovered he had the power to transform into a powerful superhero by saying the word “Shazam!”
In this new adventure, Billy must come to terms with the responsibility of being a superhero, while also dealing with the challenges of growing up. He’s clearly going to need to dig deep if he’s going to take down the daughters and their attack dragon. But Billy doesn’t have to face this challenge alone, as he will have the help of his foster family and his new friends from the previous film, who also possess powers of their own.
As the story unfolds, we’re bound to find out more about the mysterious Wizard who gave Billy his powers, and his connection to the gods. With a mix of action, humor and family ties, Shazam! Fury of the Gods looks set to have a few surprises and unexpected twists along the way.

Shazam 2 Fury of the Gods UK release date
AdvertisementThe UK release date for Shazam 2 Fury of the Gods took place on March 17, 2023. It was listed on British cinema schedules relatively early, so there wasn’t much concern about the prospect of a split UK and North America release.
The release of the film is highly anticipated and will follow the successful debut of its predecessor Shazam!, which was arrived in 2019 with decent box office numbers worldwide. The sequel will be a continuation of the first film, which introduced audiences to the teenage Billy Batson and his alter-ego, the superhero Shazam.
The big question, though, is whether or not Fury of the Gods will be the last film in the series with James Gunn and Peter Safran now in charge at DC Studios. We’ve already seen films getting cancelled and Henry Cavill is now out of the frame as Superman, so it could be a similar story for Shazam!
With the March 17, 2023 UK release date it should then go on to come out on DVD, Blu-ray and standard digital around July 2023. It’ll be just in time for the summer hols, so it should have a good chance of landing the number 1 home entertainment crown in the UK.
North America release date
AdvertisementThe North American release date for Shazam 2 Fury of the Gods also took place on March 17th, 2023. The date was announced by Warner Bros and its right on time for Easter, which is a clear indication of the studios’ expectations for the film.
The North American audience usually gets home entertainment a little earlier than in the UK, so the DVD, Blu-ray and standard digital should be around June. It’ll depend on how well Shazam! 2 does at the box office, but with a slow opening weekend we might get a relatively quick home media release.
Shazam 2 Fury of the Gods age rating
As for the Shazam! Fury of the Gods age rating, it has been given a 12A certificate in the UK, which is equivalent to PG-13 in North America. This is similar to its predecessor Shazam! which was rated 12 in the UK and PG-13 in the US. It’s worth noting that the first film had superhero action sequences and mild language, which contributed to its rating.

The age rating for the UK has now been confirmed by the British Board of Film Classification with the release date in the bag. Given the nature of the superhero genre in general, a 12 certification for Shazam! Fury of the Gods was always a safe bet.
AdvertisementThis translated over to the North America release as a PG-13 once again. There was nothing in the trailer below to indicate that the sequel would be much more intense than the opening Shazam! movie. It was a similar story with Aquaman, Wonder Woman and Justice League.

Marta Milans and Cooper Andrews play Billy’s foster parents Rosa and Victor Vasquez.

The runtime for Shazam 2 Fury of the Gods has been officially announced as 2 hours and 10 minutes. It was always likely to be around the same length as its predecessor, which had a runtime of 2 hours and 12 minutes.
Trailers
AdvertisementThe official trailer for Shazam 2 Fury of the Gods was released on the Warner Bros. YouTube channel on April 7th, 2023. It gave us our first look at the highly anticipated sequel and it builds things up slowly to the godly challenge facing the superhero.
It clearly doesn’t take itself too seriously, with as many gags as there are battles with dragons and gods. Shazam’s costume was always a bit old school, but when all of the family are together it looks a bit on the ropy side.
However, Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu and Rachel Zeglar look impressive as the daughters of Atlas and the dragon fight has got a lot of potential. It should be a light-hearted family superhero flick that’s worth catching on the big screen, just like the previous film.
