Secret Invasion DNA harvest, Marvel’s Groot, Frost Beast, Cull Obsidian, Extremis and Rosa Dalton

Secret Invasion DNA harvest and Rosa Dalton's scientific experiment

Episode 2 of Secret Invasion landed with some interesting developments for Marvel, including a DNA harvest of Frost Beast, Groot, Cull Obsidian and Extremis by Rosa Dalton. You’ve probably already got your own theory, but here’s our take on what it all means for the future of the Disney Plus show and the MCU.

What we know so far is that the Skrulls are in the process of invading earth with Gravick leading the way. In Episode 2, Promises, he manages to wrest control of the Skrull council from his opposition to get the green light for his plan for global conquest.

The science project appears to be at the center of his contingency plans should things go against him. He mentioned a few things during the dialogue in Secret Invasion that tell us a lot about the Frost Beast, Groot, Cull Obsidian and Extremis DNA harvest and Dr. Rosa Dalton’s scientific experiment in the base in Russia.

What is Rosa Dalton’s experiment?

Secret Invasion hasn’t done a lot to give us all of the details on Rosa Dalton and the experiment that she’s working on for Gravick. However, we can take a lot from what we’ve seen in the first two episodes of the Disney Plus show.

To start with, we know that the Skrulls are shape-shifters and they’re using technology to augment their abilities to do this. We saw in Episode 1 a Skrull taking on the form of a captured human where the host was hooked up to a machine that also allowed them to take on their memories.

This means that they don’t just look and sound like their human disguise, they also know everything about them to be able to fool even their closest friends and family. We’re assuming that Rosa Dalton was behind this technology, but it looks like she’s going one step further on a project for Garick.

When the breakaway general takes over the Skrull Council, one of them ask what he’ll do if earth calls in the Avengers to stop him. His response was simply, “you don’t think I haven’t thought about that” before telling them to put their faith in him.

We already know that Skrulls have superhuman strength, but it isn’t nearly strong enough to fight off the Avengers. The fact that they were nearly wiped out by the Kree army before they fled their home world is a pretty good indicator that their power is limited and not strong enough to fight bigger threats.

Clearly, the Avengers would fall into that, so if Garick isn’t concerned about the world’s greatest protectors then he’s clearly got a plan. We’re betting that the plan and the science project led by Rosa Dalton are related and it’s all about making the Skrulls strong enough to beat the Avengers should they get involved.

It’s one thing being able to change your appearance to look like other people, but it’s another to take on all of their attributes. Clearly, the Skrulls can’t just become the Incredible Hulk by looking like him, but if they could develop technology to fully adapt their DNA to be the same as the Avengers then that would give them a pretty good chance of success.

The Secret Invasion DNA harvest – Frost Beast, Cull Obsidian, Groot and Extremis

It looks like Rosa Dalton’s scientific project is to allow the Skrulls to fully turn into super-powered individuals from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, to do this she needs good DNA samples to follow. You can see in the conversation she has with Gravick’s second in command, Pagon, that things aren’t going perfectly on that score.

The conversation takes place in her lab part way through Secret Invasion Episode 2. Pagon says that the harvests weren’t where Gravick thought they would be and Dalton says that their DNA selection remains limited.

However, when G’aia is on the computer slightly later in episode, she sees that they have DNA for Groot, at least, along with Frost Beast, Cull Obsidian and Extremis. That gives them a pretty good start, but clearly not enough for what remains of the Avengers.

However, we’re expecting the DNA harvest to continue throughout the rest of Secret Invasion and we know from She-Hulk that it’s at least possible to get hold of some seriously powerful DNA. Spider-Man wouldn’t be that difficult to come by, although the Sony deal will probably rule this out, but if you consider the fact that we’ve seen Thanos bleed, there’s a lot of potential for this story arc to develop.

Groot is probably the most powerful name on the DNA harvest list so far, but the Frost Beasts of Jotunheim will be pretty impressive too. You will have seen Cull Obsidian fighting alongside Thanos in Avengers Infinity War and Endgame, so you know what he can do.

Finally, there’s Extremis, which is another name for the MCU’s Super Soldier Serum, so when you add that to everything above, they’re already going to be pretty formidable. Groot, Cull Obsidian and an army of Frost Beast monsters is going to be pretty hard to stop with the addition of a few Super Soldiers thrown in for good measure.

It looks like they’re going to be on the hunt for more DNA, so we’re expecting a few surprises as we get closer to the final episode of Secret Invasion. It hasn’t been a perfect start for the Disney Plus series, but with the new developments it’s got a lot of potential to get better towards the end.

As things stand, we don’t know if the scientific experiments that Rosa Dalton is working on for Garick actually work, so just because they have a DNA harvest for Groot, Frost Beast, Cull Obsidian and Extremis it doesn’t mean they can actually turn into a Flora Gigantis and the rest. We’re betting they’re either close or already have the technology, so it’s just a matter of time before they use it and add to their list of super-powered options.
