It’s been a fair old while since Pixies released a new album, in fact you’d have to go back to 1991’s Trompe Le Monde, but after a 23 year full record hiatus they’re about to release their 5th studio album, Indie Cindy. Bringing together the songs from their last three EPs, it’s a 12 track beast that will see the band stamp firmly into their 28th year, despite their sometimes disparate relationship.
EP 1, EP 2 and EP 3 have been quietly seeping new material out of the recesses of Black Francis’ mind since 2013 and in Indie Cindy they’re getting a big boots wrapper to hole up in. Set for release on the 28th April 2014, it could see a new dawn for the band, although admittedly it’s now without original member, Kim Deal, who left the band as they were in the midst of kicking things off for EP1 in June 2013.
Bagboy, the first single from Indie Cindy, was released last year as a part of EP1. If you missed the EPs and you’re looking for yet more of a taster of what to expect from the album, check out the video for the title track below, which is a brilliantly classic alt-rock track that’s as off kilter and on the button as their previous material.
If the weight of fan expectations was playing on Francis Black, David Lovering and Joey Santiago’s minds when they were recording the new album, it definitely doesn’t show in the finished product. From what we’ve heard on the two tracks mentioned above, and the rest of their EP output, it’s going to be polished and crusty nugget of excellent musical bliss.
The good news for record lovers is that the Indie Cindy album will be hitting independent record stores around the land a whole ten days earlier than it’s official release date on the 28th April 2014 as a part of this year’s Record Store Day.
If you think that Pixies have been away all too long, you’re probably right in a way, but equally they’ve been doing a whole lot more than you might think, but it hasn’t necessarily been a smooth road over the years. They’ve been through it all, hiatus, shut-down, throwing guitars at each other, but over the years, whether they’ve had new material or not, they’ve put in a lot of touring miles to give the fans a chance to hear them live and while Kim isn’t a part of the band any more, it seems there’s still a lot to look forward to.
Pixies also have a pretty comprehensive European tour on the cards this year too and will be bringing Paz Lenchantin, their new bassist, along for the ride. There will be four stop offs ins the UK, including a set at London’s Field Day festival on the 8th June, Eden Sessions in Cornwall on the 9th July, Castlefield Bowl in Manchester on the 10th July and T In The Park on the 11th July.
