Things get pretty hectic in Engulfed Castle in Pikmin 4 when the Waterwraith drops in, but it all comes to a head in the last sublevel where you have to defeat the roller boss. Up until this point, it’s all been about staying out of its way and working around it to get through, but here you’ll need to beat it head on.
As ever with Pikmin 4 it’s all about getting the right strategy to defeat the Waterwraith, so the guide below should give you everything you need to be able to speed on through the boss fight. You might have noticed that the roller boss of Engulfed Castle is pretty indestructible for the most part, but it can be beat.
AdvertisementFor anyone that doesn’t know, the Waterwraith is actually a returning enemy type from Pikmin 2. It’s a bit like Mr X in Resident Evil 2 in the previous sublevels, but down at the bottom of Engulfed Castle, there’s nowhere to run and you need to defeat it to get to the end.

How to defeat the Waterwraith
As mentioned above, Engulfed Castle is all about avoiding the Waterwraith for the most part, because for the first four sublevels it isn’t possible to defeat it. Pikmin 4 kind of tells you this when the roller boss first drops in, but if you’ve been trying to smash it before Sublevel 5 you should give in now.
AdvertisementInstead, you’ll need to lure it away from the areas you’ve to complete tasks and then rush back to get things done. If you’re stuck on any part of Engulfed Castle and you’re here hoping to defeat the Waterwraith before this you might want to watch the walkthrough below to see how to get past it.
However, things change when you get down to Sublevel 5 and you’ve got the 01 marker on the blocked route to the exit. This means that you need to defeat the Waterwraith to be able to get the last castaway rescue in Engulfed Castle and make it to the exit.

The other thing that you’ll find at the bottom of the cavern is two Purple Pikmin buds, which will give you ten of the hefty bruisers. To begin with they come in handy to drop the paper bag blocking the way into the roller boss fight arena.
However, they’re useful beyond this as they’re an integral part of the strategy to defeat the Waterwraith, which you can see in full in the video below. When you get into the arena, the boss will drop down onto the egg and you can move in for the start of the fight.
Hit it with a Purple Pikmin and you should see that it changes and becomes less water-like and more solid. This is the transition that you need to be able to defeat it, so as soon as you hit it with a Purple Pikmin and it transforms you can fire in the rest to do as much damage as possible.
Sadly, it doesn’t take long for the Waterwraith to shake them off, so you probably won’t be able to take its health wheel down too much. However, now that you know the trick you should be able to repeat the process to get past the first phase of the boss fight.
Once you take down its health to nothing, it’s roller will smash and it will start to run around, flailing its arms. Grab your Pikmin and get back in close to it before throwing another Purple at it, which will again make it solid enough to be able to damage it some more.

It’ll start to cower on the ground and you can fire in as many Pikmin as you can to hit the Waterwraith. If you can time it right, you can do an Oatchi charge to get more Pikmin on it when it’s down, but it’s a fine window of opportunity, so if you want to play it safe you can do.
AdvertisementAs before, it’ll shake off the Pikmin fairly quickly and start to run around some more, so track it down and hit it with another Purple to make it real again. Get in your hits when it’s cowering on the floor and repeat the process until you defeat it.
It’s sort of melt into nothing after the final hit and spit out a CD treasure for your to carry back to the base. There’s also a hidden treasure on the right hand side of the roller boss fight area, so don’t forget to grab that before you head up the exit.
Finally, with the Waterwraith beaten the 01 block is down and you can rescue the castaway on the other side. It’s a musician, so not integral to the Pikmin 4 story, but does count to the 100% tally for Engulfed Castle, so again get them back to the base to finish things off.

Conclusion
The Pikmin 4 Waterwraith is one of the scariest bosses in the game when you first encounter it, but as soon as you know that the key to being able to defeat it is Purple Pikmin things start to go smoothly. You won’t get these until you make it down to the roller boss in Sublevel 5, but as soon as you do you can make it pay for all of the worry in the previous sublevels.
